It was strange. When they arrived, one was smaller compared to the rest and it was getting run over in the box. The other 2 that died were fine the day after they arrived. They ate and drank, but the next day they died. They seem to take longer to mature too. My other pullets are laying now and they are now 6 months old and aren't near ready to lay yet. I don't think I will get them again.

I think the different hatcheries have different prices on different breeds.
Their site says they'll send extra chicks up to 4% of you order total. (Was the extra a Meyer Meal Maker that you ordered or was it just an extra chick they added for you?)
I think you're right about the SF; that reminds me, it's a good idea to check into the breeds we're getting and what time of year we're getting them (what the weather's like). Getting a baby shipped through the mail in the dead of summer that's not a heat tolerant breed doesn't sound like a good idea, now that I think about it.
I got sex-links as part of my original flock last spring (gold Comets); they're fantastic! I wanted layers that can free range and they're super! They're not cuddly, but they aren't aggressive either (they will stand up for themselves against another chicken; I've had breeds that won't).
If you're asking my opinion on which hatchery you should go with, I think you should order from the hatchery that's closest to you that has the breed you want. (That's what I understand is safest for the chicks.) Personally, I would suggest calling on the phone so you can ask questions and get information that you might not come across or find in the online process. That's just me though. =)

Ahhh, so maybe either order very local or order hatching eggs (and take those chances).
{I wonder what the final cost per chick is on delicate/sensitive breeds is between losing a third or a quarter of day-old chicks versus whatever hatch rate would be....}
For instance,
I bought day-old chicks of a breed that I didn't realize wasn't going to work out on my property; 4*$2.69 and lost three of them to predation. I spent $10.76 + tax on one chicken.

Just an update here. From the first batch, the last remaining good hen turned out to be a rooster.
So after spending well over a hundred dollars for 2 different orders, I have no egg laying true breed chickens to account for.
Just one easter egger rooster that I don't even want. Wonderfull!! Congratulations Meyer Hatcher for another job well done.
