I have recently placed my first order(s) with Meyer's and checked the box to receive the free meal maker special. I did this on two separate orders. This is such a fantastic idea! My husband, my children, and myself have specifically ordered more egg layers, as well as broilers for this exact purpose of sharing with the community. Has anyone had any experience with helping out your community with this offer? This is what their website description says:

  • Meyer Meal Maker

Thanks
MEYER MEAL MAKER

A Meyer Meal Maker is a FREE day old baby chick from Meyer Hatchery. Raise the chick to laying or butchering age and simply donate the eggs or meat produced from that chicken to a local family or charity. Whether you order 3 layers or 300, you can request a Meyer Meal Maker on every chick order you place. Same goes for meat birds! This is just one simple way you and your family can get involved and make a difference in your community.
What will my Meyer Meal Maker be? We will include a free extra chick that is similar to what is already on your order. Example: If you ordered all female layers, we send another female layer - we won't stick you with a meat bird! Same goes if you order all meat birds - we won't send you a layer.
How can one chick make such a difference? If you receive an average laying Meyer Meal Maker chick, you'll be able to donate roughly 182 eggs in one year after that hen begins laying. That's over 15 dozen eggs going to hungry people in your community. Just imagine if you and every other chicken keeper around the world kept one hen for the same purpose.

I had read about something similar to this called Steer.inc and it was for farmers & ranchers. I LOVE LOVE LOVE :clap:clap:clapthis idea! I know who I'll be buying birds from if I ever need to! Thanks for sharing:thumbsup
I really think it's amazing. It's not something where they're trying to get rid of the roosters either. It's an egg layer, or meat bird. Basically, whatever your order already consists of, they will try their best to match. Everyone should take one of these if they had the means. If you already have chickens it won't cost much more to feed an extra and donate the eggs and/or meat. You could even do both. We already ordered extra egg layers, and meat birds with the idea in mind to help our community out (we ordered extra from cackle....I should be receiving those within a few days). Then I ordered from Meyer to try them out and I seen this. It's a great idea!

Oh and I'll keep everybody updated on the delivery and baby chicks. I have two large shipments coming from cackle, and Meyer so it's going to be a super busy month!

@Kristen D I ordered the Mealmaker from Meyer's as well, and got a production red layer. I was very excited about this option as I am the director of our local food pantry. We are in a rural area and serve 400-500 families a month. It can sometimes get expensive for me to buy enough eggs for the pantry, I only have 2 families that donate eggs. I highly recommend getting in contact with your local pantry and see if you can help. Most also take donations of produce!
Also, keep in mind when donating anything to charity organizations, that you should only give things you would use or eat yourself, not garbage. It just isn't kind, and can be expensive for organizations to dispose of your trash!
Thanks for thinking of others, Kristen!
