Meyers: Positives and Negitives--what's your experience?

I just ordered the Assortment of Rainbow Pullets it should be here either next Wednesday or Thursday. In fact 50 of them what kind did you get?

Hello, Out of my June Meyers shipment I must guess at what they are. Have about 6 that look like New Hampshire Reds, however, they could be Buff Comets or Buff Chen...(can't spell the name... from Canada). Have 4 or 5 that could be Black Austrop or Black Giant Jeresy. Two black chicks may be Black Sumatra. About 4 white leghorn and 3 White Rock, I think. About 6 are Barred Rock or Cuckoo Marans. 3 or 4 are Partridge Rocks or something that looks alike that. That is all I can think of now, but I am really pleased at the assortment I recieved.

I have not been overly impressed with my Meyers Hatchery experience this summer. I ordered 50 Salmon Faverolle pullets, but when I expected my order to be delivered, I received a phone call from the Meyers Hatchery informing me that they had a "bad hatch" and only 14 of the Faverolle pullets could be delivered. I was offered hatch dates much later in the summer for this type of chicken, which was not helpful. We talked about substituting another breed, and I felt forced to make a decision as soon as possible so the shipment could be made. I didn't like the choices I was given very much, but I settled on 15 Dominique pullets and one Dominique rooster to round out the order to 30.

All 30 chicks arrived alive, but within a week two of the 13 Faverolles died. I separated the feisty Dominiques from the more docile Faverolles, and since them all have survived (which may have been the real reason for the chick mortality). Unfortunately, one of the Favorelle pullets has a severely deformed cross beak, and the "Dominique" rooster and four of the 15 Dom pullets had single combs rather than the rose comb that distinguishes the Dominique from the Barred Rock. In addition, two of the Dom pullets have severely deformed, twisted toes. I have made a consistent effort to provide high quality medicated chick starter, fresh water, and a clean and draft-free cage, so I'm not sure why I have experienced so many problems with deformities and characteristics that not standard to the breed.

To be fair, I am a novice with raising chickens. However, I believe that I have had much healthier chicks from Ideal and Mt Healthy Hatcheries (Cincinnati, Ohio) with characteristics more consistent with the advertised breeds.

When asked by a friend to raise 50 Buff Orpington pullets this month, I immediately chose Mt Healthy. I don't think I'll take another chance on Meyers.

Just my two cents worth.

I just got my order of 25 this morning from Meyer of the Rainbow pullets and all but 1 are dead with the last one barely hanging on. I called and they want me to count the dead and call back on Friday for my "refund". Poor things.

Wow, that is such a shame!!!!!!!!! I ordered the same thing fornext week delivery - will post how I make out - I usually order from Ideal, but they had that Rainbow Pullet Special

I will try Meyer again next year, but I have to say this was my first year with them was very mediocre. First they had to sun my order which was fine, then they put the wrong phone number on the box which I knew was their wrong doing because they had to call me to ask what I would be willing to sub with, and then the Blue Andulsian I ordered out of 25 only 3 turn out blue. So it was very mediocre. I will try again next year.

i got 10 silkies from them to start breeding them all 10 survived and are now beutiful adults 1 or 2 of which may meet show standards but they are all males

ordered 50 of the Assorted Rainbow Pullet and they arrived today. There were five that were DOA and some that are very weak that I am watching very carefully. They don't seem to be in good heath all of the black ones especially. I had an assortment of RIRs, Salmon F, Barred Rocks, Black, Aust, Dark Cornish, Colum Wyandotte, Golden Buff, White Rocks. I may or may not have others ones, don't really know yet.

Hello Chile!

I buy all my day old chicks from Meyer, and I just love that place. I'm lucky enough to be just an hour away, so I often pick up small chick orders.....They are great. I've never lost a chick yet, and their sexing has been 100% on target for me.

I bought 25 chicks from Meyer's this May, and they shipped from Ohio to Oregon in 2 days with only 1 chick lost. A couple were kind of weak, but they eventually perked up.

I got white Silkies, partridge Silkies and blue Silkies. They are all very pretty with nice puffy topknots. A few are bearded.

I also ordered 4 Welsummers and they threw in an extra one. Our Welsummers (all hens) are a bit aggressive, though (to the other chickens) and I've read that the breed isn't supposed to be. They are very nice, though as far as color and shape.

I also got Golden Laced Wyandottes, Silver Laced Wyandottes and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. Of the 8 Wyandottes 2 had upright combs rather than rose combs. From pictures of BLRW I've seen, the ones we got from Meyer's are very nice.

The Silkies are straight run, but all the Welsummers and Wyandottes ended up being the sex we ordered. Of the Silkies we got 7 hens and 4 roosters. Pretty good!

So overall I am happy with Meyer's Hatchery and would order from them again.

The only problem we had is that one partridge Silkie rooster developed a crossed beak at about a month old. I don't know if that is a fluke or a weakness in their partridge Silkie line. Years ago we got some partridge Silkies from Meyer's and one rooster had a crossed beak.
