Wanted to start a new thread... didn't want to ruin Ideals thread that just started.

However I just read about all of the info on MG in hatcheries accross the countries. Very disappointing news for a lot of people me included.

Honestly I think it is very disturbing that the USDA will not regulate this in hatcheries.

Curious to hear your thoughts and concerns...

If you disagree... how can we change it... or demand that hatcheries get tested?

For those that are looking for an MG NEGATIVE flock go to HOOVERS as I just got off of the phone with them and look foward to supporting their buisness and efforts to supply us with clean poultry. I specifically asked for paperwork stating that they are MG FREE. Most have it on the NPIP paperwork.

As mad as I am... about this whole thing... I still want to keep it civil as I'm sure there are people out there with opposite beliefs than me.

So far I have...

Welp-broilers negative.
Hoovers
Moyers
Ridgway

Anyone else get anything?

ETA: I added more...

WELP is out... here to find out only their broilers are MG negative... The rest of their birds are dropped shipped from Privett, which to find out are not MG negative.

Sad but true... not many backyard hatcheries are mg negative. However almost all big hatcheries that hatch commercial breeds are tested regularly. Reason being is that it's easier to control... they practice all in all out and they have more money. Bottom line is, it cost to much to get them tested every 90 days. I was told it's 60.00 / test and that for a flock test (certain % of birds)

Hmmm... I wonder if that is why every one of the 40 chicks I got at Cackle this year died on me - one by one.

Symptoms they had were -

failure to thrive, leg problems, watery eyes, puffed up - then they would just be dead one morning.

had 15 delawares and 25 light brahmas

of course, Cackle said I was the only one who had a problem - then I look on here and quite a few folks are complaining about their chicks from Cackle this year (and getting the same lousy customer service about it).

I also read where folks had no problems with their particular chicks from Cackle, so maybe it is just certain breeders they deal with - but I'm not taking that chance ever again with Cackle.

so far, I've had the best luck with Mt. Healthy Hatchery.

I think there is only one hatchery that is MG Free, but my feelings are that if you own a free ranging flock, then they probably have MG as well. MG is transmitted by wild birds.

So, I would think unless you have them in an enclosed coop, with no access to wild birds, they might or probably have MG as well.
