Thanks!
It's day 13. I feel like such a failure. Another quitter this morning. My incubator has been doing amazing, I don't know what the problem is. The temp hasn't gotten below 99, and not above 100.2. Humidity has been in the 40s.
I'm down to 5 eggs.![]()
Oh okay! Yeah sounds great!Thanks!
Well, these babies are intended for my broody hen if they hatch. She's on day 23 now. I am thinking about just finding some babies for her. I feel so bad that she's still waiting.
I did an eggtopsy. Looked like the baby had crossbeak.

Thanks, Andrea!!! You're right. I expected there to be quitters, but it's always kind of sad. Esp. to see the baby after it dies, and hold it. It was so cute.Oh no! I'm sorry to hear this!![]()

Sometimes quitters just happen. You could do eggtopsies to try to get a better idea as to why but sometimes you just can't know.
When ordering eggs online, you're getting eggs from a flock that you can't see. You don't know how that flock is cared for, what they're fed, how clean they are, whether the eggs are left out in the elements or collected quickly, you don't know how the eggs were stored or whether they were gently rocked before shipment, and don't even get me started on what they possibly could have gone through in shipment, tossing, dropping, radiation from x-rays, etc.
With that many things out of your hands and then the occasional genetic issues. It probably doesn't behave anything to do with you.
I had a great hatch from my shipped eggs, super healthy babies but there were still quitters. One was a late quitter that I did an eggtopsy on and it was completely dwarfed! Short legs, beak, neck, pudgy short little toes...I mean, it was adorable but it was supposed to be a standard sized chick and that was clearly the reason it quit and if it had hatched I'm sure it would have struggled to thrive.
