i usually brood my chicks in the house to start with, but this time they were outside. they were in a rabbit cage, halfway up the walls was 1/2 x 1 and the rest of the wall was 1x1, sealed up tight. were fine at first, but 2 or 3 days later, i come out and the throats have been chewed out of them... I assume its a mouse, only thing small enough to fit... at what age do quail look less interesting to them?

Put some mice traps with peanut butter on them to catch the mice/rat.

It's likely rats after the feed. Rats love GBS.. Once he ate all the birds feed, he ate what was in there crop... Rat trap or bait blocks like "Tom Cat" works... Traps and you are sure you got it.... Good luck,Bill

EDIT TO ADD: Joe laid all this out in a thread a couple weeks ago and ended up being right on the money, the rat was caught... Yours will likely be back for another feast.
