Just supervise the broody when giving her the chick!

I'm probably never going to use a broody as a foster mom after the incident last week. I gave my dedicated EE broody day-old cornishx and bcm chicks, she was great with them that evening, clucking to them and tucking them under her fluff. The next morning I went out to find her grabbing the BCMs and tossing them across the coop. She was successful in killing one BCM and wounding four more, thank God the other ones have recovered and are doing well. I tossed the broody on the other side of the coop divider so she clucks through the hardware cloth to them.
I was just sick with myself, guilty and felt absolutely horrible because I wanted the babies to have a real momma and I didn't want to mess with heat lamps again.

This is just a warning that grafting chicks to broodies isn't always a success.

Oh wow eek. Is rather give her hatching eggs but Id rather not have more Roos :/.

Well. Looks like all three of my silkies are broody now. One has one egg under her. I'm probably going to move it under the one that's been broody the longest, and put some olive egger and chocolate egger eggs under the other 2 once I have confirmed fertility. Old roo has been out for a month on Wednesday, new roo has been in since yesterday.

Oh. And my cuckoo Marans hen is broody. I tried to give her chicks last year and she went after them so either she has to hatch her own or she's just a bad broody. Holy cow. I might get in big trouble if I give everyone eggs!

I put 35 eggs in the incubator on May 3rd , doing a Memorial Day weekend hatch as I have extra days off. The eggs were collected starting May 1st to May 3rd so some may hatch a little early. I bought 6 Black Copper Marans and 6 Splash Marans with 3 bonus Splash eggs. The rest are from my own mixture of chickens. I candled twice and am bummed that 4 of the Black Coppers had no development, but the lady I got them from said she would replace them or give me a discount on chicks. Then today near disaster, I woke up at 1:30am and my house was totally black the power was out. I ran to get a flashlight to check the temp in the incubator and it was down to 81F. I called the power company to see when power would be restored they were not sure as they had received the first call at 12:30 and had not found the problem yet. Panick started to set in so woke up my husband and told him the power was out and I was worried about my eggs and the ducklings I had in the brooder, they were all huddled together. Without a word he went out in the pouring rain to get our generator out of the garage and set it up on the deck, I ran an extension cord to the basement and pluged everything in to a power bar. I don't think it should affect my hatch. Going to start my lockdown tomorrow so excited.:)

Gotta love those doting husbands!

We did the same thing, put a bunch of eggs in the bator for a Memorial Day hatch. I woke up and 3 have pipped and I hear chirping. Yayy! Was getting nervous there for a bit. There are Silkie eggs, Polish eggs, mixed LF eggs and then duck and turkey which won't hatch for another week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone!!

Come on chickies!

Looks like I have about 12 chicks hatched out so far. It's hard to get a good count because every time I turn the light on they go bonkers in there.

Still have about that many more to go though. I have to resist opening the bator, that's the hard part. I see quite a few pips in there still so I for sure won't open it while there are pips. I hate having shrink wrapped babies
