Michigan Hatchers! What'cha got cookin?

Ooooh bad momma hen! Shame on her, pecking her poor lil' babies.

My two broody girls are usually pretty good hatching out the chicks but as soon as they have hatched and started moving about the pen and I come by with treats they high tail it and come running and always leave their lil' chicks behind. You can hear the babies chirping a mile away. Sounds like you have some good broody moms to help though @gladahmae

That's my "adoptive" broody that I gave the pecked up chick to, and her 2 mottled houdan/blue Wyandotte mix babies. She's got 5 or so more eggs left to hatch.

My BO broody is hatching eggs today. Day 20. Good and bad news. I came home this afternoon and visited the broody and both OE eggs were close to being born when I looked under mama. So I waited another hour and then went out again and one was fully out, which is the good news. Then I notice the other egg, which I could see the face, was looking odd, so I picked it up and there were maggots crawling in the open hole and it was not zipped all around, just a big gaping hole and the chick was dead! :barnie Now, I'm waiting on the 6 marans eggs and I didn't notice any pips on them. Thankfully, this broody has not once pecked me and all I have to do is touch her wing and she just lets me partially lift her to look under. She's a first-timer and so sweet. Praying for the best.

Gladahmae,
Thank you responding to my post. The egg I mentioned still has not hatched. All the others hatched Saturday night, so I'm not sure why these guys are still not out yet. One has a dime sized hole and I can see its face, the other has a foot sticking out only.
I have not "helped" them at all, but I'm wondering if these guys usually pull through, or die trying?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure there's a "sticky" in the hatching forum for interventions and helping chicks out. It would be a good read. Knowing that the other chicks hatched Saturday, I would say to try to help them. Be sure to stop if you see any bleeding in the membrane.

Ugh. kind of bummed about the situation in my broody coop. The 2 LF girls have hatched quite a few of the eggs I gave them, and they took on the 5 chicks (2 to one, 3 to the other) from the incubator no problem. BUT, the larger of the girls, the one that I gave more eggs and more chicks to seems to have squished 2 of her eggs, resulting in dead chicks, partially out of the shell, with fully absorbed yolks.

She's got 3 eggs left, and everything I put under them looked great when i took put them under the girls on day 17, so HOPEFULLY I get a couple more chicks out of those (they're eggs from my mottled houdan hen and blue wyandotte rooster). Only 1 of the 8 silkie eggs has pipped (I know! today is just day 21!) and when i was peeking into that coop, the hen that's supposed to be sitting on those eggs was up eating and dust bathing. She didn't like me poking at her eggs though, and got right back on them.
