Michigan Hatchers! What'cha got cookin?

rtf my hatch didnt go as well as planned, i had a couple of days the temp was low, got 10 out of 20 eggs to hatch. and 2 duck eggs are still in there with pips, i think its this time of year there was days my humidity was up, on its own, i always do dry hatch. some of the eggs looked a little watery compared to what they normally do on certain days before hatch.

i have never hatched duck eggs, how long doe it take for them to hatch after they pip,

I am surprised any of the duck eggs are even piped, i started out with 14, put them under a australorp broody, with rain, and nasty weather, they were looking watery and bad, finally after she was down to 8 eggs, i decided to put 4 in the bator and leave 4 out with her, she ended giving up on her eggs and giving up on broodiness..


Today i got 10 eggs out of 11 hens, my 2 hens that were broody are laying again.

Despite a 50% failure rate by my broody hens, this one is doing a great job with her 10 babies.

Sorry about the low hatch rate... I'm glad you got some to hatch...
I'm very unfamiliar with duck eggs. We had ducks that never did lay an egg. They are now in the freezer.

YES!!! Here is the first, an Iowa Blue baby. The other two were not even pipped yet, both EE eggs...today is day 21 though and she is still sitting.

My hatch rate was pretty poor, but I wasn't that surprised by that. I just put eggs in a carton on my counter and kept adding to it for about 3 weeks. My toddler got into them a few times, colored on a few with a dry-erase marker, dropped a few (those broke and were thrown away obviously) but I basically didn't do any of the things you're "supposed" to do to help yourself get a good hatch rate. I also was collecting eggs 3 weeks after I re-homed the cockerel from that pen, so I didn't think they all developed.

As for the 50% broody-failure rate.....well that was the BROODIES! 2 killed chicks, and a 3rd was trying to kill the 1st one out of the shell when I caught her in the act. They sat like champs and then were horrible mothers.



I just YESTERDAY got my incubator wiped, rinsed, and bleached out so TODAY I'm going to try to get my eggs set. I think I'll have around 2doz to put in and that's plenty for my last hatch of the year. Seriously considering putting some dry rice in a cup in the incubator to get the humidity lower since I'm setting eggs with a thick color coat (marans and OEs). Plus it's super humid here right now. My garden is loving it, but I don't think my incubator will feel the same way.

I just set eggs last night. I'm going to take the advice I was given earlier about using sponge and paper towel to keep humidity up at lock down. I usually start with 20 eggs, and after the first candling I always have a few duds. That should make room for a couple 8oz glass jars with sponges in them.
My last hatch was 13/19. Not too bad... Hopefully this time is better ;-)

I thought I was done last time I hatched, but after doing the math I figure if I hatch in 21 days (3weeks) then that's July 3rd, I think I can still get one more hatch in if I clean the incubator right away, and set more eggs right after this batch hatches. That would put me hatching before August 1st at the latest. The chicks should be well feathered before it gets too cold for the winter. My other option is to just go buy chicks from Townline. I do like their chicks, but its so fun to hatch!!!
