And you couldn't pay me enough to live in Kansas!
Beauty and functionality are in the eye of the beholder.

Its not like I want to live in Kansas either. But you know the Army has that funny idea of all their personell and family living on or near army posts. If i could i would pack and hightail it to SE Kentucky or somewhere else nearby yesterday.
Am I not allowed to bring some negative things up if they are the truth. I think people should know about crime and such before they pick up and leave. If you deceide to go ther just stay outside the city. Check greatschool.net if you have kids in school. You dont want to end up in a inner city school. Be careful , i for one am glad to have moved away from high crime in a steeltown.

Yes folks should know about such things, however, to put a whole state in the trash because of ones bad experience is not at all fair to the many people who love where they live.
I have lived many places, some good, some I would rather not go back too. But I really think everywhere in this great country has its perks, some better than others.
Just like to me SE KY is entirely to hot, but it is beautiful!

The economy where we live is very good, and is expected to get better toward summer. This part of the state depends largely on oil, and is much different from the western part of the state, that relies on lumber and tourism. I am not sure how the ecomony is in the western part of the state, but it probably is not as good, because it does rely alot on timber.
I can say depending on where you live the crime rate are very different. It is really high in Billings (280 miles, nearest large town), and here it is very low.....if you run a stop light in Sidney it is front page news!

HHF, honestly I am in michigan and I am working like heck to get out of here. There aren't a lot of secure jobs left in the state, unemployment is the highest in this state vs the rest of the nation... The west side of the state I know of 2 large corps that I used to work for. Hard to imagine, but both of them are feeling the squeeze and things aren't as great as they were 10 years ago.

Actually, GR is the one area of the state where the economy is halfway decent. They are not so reliant on automaking, rather on food processing, furniture, that sort of thing. I like the city, actually, a big city but not too big. They have a Mongolian Barbecue

Large amount of Dutch/German Protestant, the dominant ethnic group. Quite a bit more WASP than Detroit or Ann Arbor. My dad works for Priority Health and goes to GR Mon & Tues and it took him awhile to get used to their way of doing things as he was used to dealing with minorities (he speaks Polish and we're Hamtramck Poles at heart) and had worked at Catholic and Jewish hospitals, never a "general" one. GR area is more conservative politically than Ann Arbor or Detroit. McDonald's also has their state hq there (for MI)

Oh, you'll also have to get used to Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Vernors, Euchre, Blue Moon ice cream, Faygo and Spartan Stores

and of course hearing "Fred Bear" and "T'irty Point Buck" on the radio 20x a day during rifle season

It depends on where you live, like anywhere else.

Go WINGS!

just like Ohio they depend a lot on the Automobil/steel industry which is awful at best
you couldnt pay me enough to live in either state ever again

Actually, there are a lot of opportunities in Michigan in the areas of energy and health care. Hemlock Semiconductor (5 minutes from where I grew up) is the world's largest producer of the silicon used in computer chips. They just expanded, bringing more jobs to Michigan. The auto industry has been failing here for years. It's old news to any Michigander. The future here is not in cars.

By the way, I lived and worked seasonally in Ohio for four years. I was a supervisor at Cedar Point -- great fun!

Definitely, the west side of the state is "where it's at." I grew up on the eastern side of the state (Saginaw/Bay City area), and moved to west Michigan ten years ago. There is a lot more to do here.

The downtown area of Grand Rapids is really nice. There is nightlife; there are great hotels downtown, bars, museums, and restaurants. This area has an IMAX theater, a hockey team, an indoor football team, a baseball team, a ballet company, a symphony orchestra, and several large universities.

On the Lake Michigan coast there are really fun, kinda touristy towns to go beaching at in the summer.

Yup, but we also have a large Hispanic, African American, and Asian population here, too, especially in the more urban areas.

Vernors, Euchre, Blue Moon ice cream, Faygo and Spartan Stores

And 10-cent pop bottle refunds. Yes, it's "pop".

Being you're from Bay City area, do they use "yas" as "plural you" over on the west side like they do in Bay City?

East side of the state has more Polish people! AND Potato festivals!

West side gets more rain/snow so they do a lot more fruit and vegetable farming. East side, mainly root crops (sugar beets and potatoes) and dry beans. So you guys get the beauty of apple and cherry blossoms ... we get sugar beets and navy beans

Michigan also has an excellent wine industry, often overlooked as well as cheesemaking, we're not far behind Wisconsin in dairy production. Also, we have 11,000 inland lakes. No spot is more than 6 miles from a water source. Just an hour north is the Manistee Nat'l Forest and you get into the Michigan highlands, lots of rivers, lakes, hills, even skiing isn't too far from there.

Amen! What's wrong with Faygo, Spartan Stores, and Ti'rty Point Buck? Are you trying to make a point?

Ohh, don't forget Vernors

THE BEST SODA KNOWN TO MAN OR MONKEY!
