You make a great point. My DH will more than likely do what we did here. He moved before me, rented a place for 6 months, then I moved to join him in the spring. He did the house search and communicated pics to me via the computer. It worked out nicely.
It would be really tough for us both to move at the same time and rent a place with our 6 dogs and 2 horses, I have found those types of rental opportunities are few and far between! I will rehome my chickens, I think it would be to much of a pain to try to move them with me.

I am not from Grand Rapids but from the Kalamazoo/Portage area south of there about 50 miles. I was born in Michigan and have lived here all my life. We were once a great state but have fallen on econmic times but we are surviors. Kalamazoo has lost a lot of its once great industries but we keep hanging on. We have Inidan casinos one is not to far from G.R. (nickname for Grand Rapids). Michigan has some beautiful fall colors and we have lots of fruit stands. We are proud of our great lakes. Nothing is probaly more beautiful than our own Upper Peninsula! We can't compete with your natural beauty of Montana but we can try. Plus if you move to Grand Rapids you can join us Michigan backyard chicken folk and come to our Michigan Chickenstock. We are a great bunch of people and would make you feel very welcomed.

You don't know what you're missing.

Probably not, but I have been there and it just isn't where I would like to retire!

We have lots of beautiful places....granted, no mountains which I love, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I'm 60 mumble mumble something, and have lived in the Grand Rapids area all my life. Actually Wyoming, a small town on the south west border of GR. I have always been goofy about MI, love it here. We have anything anyone could need. We have cities, small towns, villages and country. We have malls and shopping centers and small shops, feed stores and big department stores. We have all the major fast food restaurants, and we have some 5 star restaurants, (and yes, we have Mongolian BarBQue). We have shores, and lakes and rivers and farms and fields and woods. Fishing, hunting and then there's morel mushrooms and wild asparagas and huckleberries and all kinds of fruits, nuts and veggies. We have snow, and we have lots of sun. And yes, lately we have some serious economic problems. As I've gotten older I've started to wonder if there is somewhere else to go where my husband and I could live more easily, with less snow and maybe better economy. We are at a point where we should be entering the easy part of our lives, but it hasn't turned out that way. But, no matter how many times we talk it over, we can't think of somewhere else to go.

Curliet, I work in Wyoming and used to live there.

I sure wish we had done that before we bought our home.

I'm from Tennessee, and I loved Michigan when I first moved here.

But the longer I'm here, the more I wanna move back south. My other half was born and raised in Michigan...and he doesn't even like it here.

Most of Mi is rural/agricultural. Grand Rapids is a very nice city. You lucky dawg. The west side is the more beautiful side of the state and the beaches are awesome. I am proud to live in Mi in spring, summer, and fall . Hate winter

That's because you don't live in Pellston! The official "coldest spot east of the Mississippi"

I don't ever want to leave this state.

Proud to be a Michiganiac!!!

It just seems like the winters are getting LONGER AND LONGER AND LONGER...
I suppose I just miss the true dog days of a Tennessee summer, the beautiful Tennessee mountains, and my Mom.
