Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

lMorning everyone

Welcome to the new ones.

beautiful chicks and goats.

electricity went out yesturday.. twice..
i wasnt home the first time and dd and dh came home 1 hr after its been out.. temp was down to 85.. then dd put a comforter on to heat it up.. went up to 105.. then she turned heat down. so it was 97 when i got home.. i cant be mad at her.. she tried.. plus temp has been staying pretty steady.. she forgot to just open top and let air out or vents. i think she tried her best for being 11 yrs old.. then last night after midnight the electricity went out again.. i covered the incubator with a sleeping bag.. uncovered a little bit after electricity came back on.. and let it go up to temp on its own.. so not sure what this hatch is going to bring after yesturday.. i have read that the core temperature has to be affected.. so i am trying to think of that instead of thinking my eggs are all damaged from this.

last night was the first night we decided to turn the broody light off during the night..they did really well . there was food in the feeder this am usually they eat all day and night... boy they eat alot.

scifisarah.. i agree you shouldnt be cold with all those sweaters..

Super excited today!! Yesterday I sucked it up and put on some really warm clothes and helped DH get more framing done on the first meaty tractor. I'm one of those people who is cold pretty much all of the time. We keep our house at 70 (outdoor wood boiler) and I still usually wear fleece pants and hoodie or fleece jacket.

I'm hoping the baby takes a nap soon so he can get more done on it while I'm at work this morning. All that's left at this point is framing in the ends and a door, and then it's time to attach all of the hardware cloth!

First batch of chicks are due to hatch this Friday/Saturday (Blue and Black Copper Marans and our own mutts), and then a second batch NEXT Friday/Saturday. And then the week after that all our meaties come!

It's going to be chick central here! Need to get the brooder situation figured out this week too. I potentially have a lot of chicks hatching. Hopefully.

I've got the wool to keep warm! I can't stand it being over 65 at night though or else I am waking up hot all night. Must be the flannel sheets since the quilt is very thin.

I like you!

If for no other reason than you have your sweaters arranged by color. The OCD in me is pleased. I don't know what the temps get down to in our bedroom at night but I rely on flannel sheets too and a quilt and another heavy blanket in-between, plus heavy jammies. It's so cozy and warm but I'm sure the room is much colder than 64.

So today is the day I move my almost 6 wk.-olds outside despite the cold temps. I'm going to try to get into town today to get a heat lamp at TSC for them. The second hatch of babies still need it upstairs. The river was supposed to crest today and last I knew the bridge into town was still open so unless I get word otherwise, I'm gonna attempt it. OR, has anyone ever used those seed warming mats in a brooder? They're 2 weeks old and there are twelve of them. I'd think they'd fit on it if they all huddled together. But is that enough heat? Mine runs continually with no shut-off timer on it, as long as its plugged in. My seedlings don't need it anymore.

A general note to all.
Andy Schneider "Chicken Whisperer" has reported more than a dozen coop fires this year caused by faulty or broken heat sources in the coop.

Please make sure that any heat source is doubly secured so that it can't fall or be knocked down by the chicks. Do not rely on the cheap clamp, use some chain, cable or stout wire. Have the bulb protected so the birds can't come in contact with it.

And don't use a Teflon coated bulb, the Teflon fumes are toxic to birds.

Off my soapbox now. Enjoy the day.

Heheheh, usually I'm the one on the soapbox about heat lamps; they freak me out. These guys aren't moving into the coop though but a special pen I built in the garage. The lamp will not be in the pen with them, rest assured. I wish it would warm up though. They're going on 6 weeks and I've witnessed a roo trying to crow -- IN MY HOUSE! They need to get out of here. They've outgrown their brooder too, standing room only pretty much. It's time.

I keep my house at a steady 60F . . . but I have Propane. I have a little IR heater for the living room. The bedrooms are over the garage (very poor planning on our part when building) so they stay a bit colder than 60F. We have lots of down comfortors around here, lol. And we layer. Would love to get an outdoor wood boiler but then I would have to buy wood and go outside to feed it. I have enough critters around here that I go outside to feed, lol.
