Today is the first day of the turkey season and hopefully at least one of the toms who spent the winter enjoying my hospitality (and corn) will stop by to say hello.
One thing people must accept if they are going to raise chickens is that some are going to die. No matter how carefully we are illness and injuries are bound to happen. Rather than feeling bad about a bird's death look upon it as a learning experience that makes you better at animal husbandry.
Laura, while Tucker is an excellent name for a dog, I think Cat would be a much better choice. Imagine the look on people's faces as you call your pet, "here Kitty, Kitty" and a dog shows up.
As I write this my old JRT lies in the floor not far from my feet. She is getting thin, her brown markings are almost faded out, her hearing is shot, and her eyes are clouded. She has difficulty judging distances which often results in her hitting walls or the edge of steps. Negotiating stairs quite often ends with her falling back down them and it is heartbreaking to see. Yet she doesn't appear to be in any pain and still runs around like she did as a puppy. The only difference is that those spurts of energy are short lived and require a nap afterwards. Come to think of it that is not unlike me.
