I'm as happy as an emu on Earth Day.

Yay! :ya They are so hard to take good pictures of with my phone, as they are always on the move. Glad that you like the pictures! Its a sunny morning and suppose to be in the mid-6os today. :weee My cow Bella have almost 3 more months to go before she delivers her 2 calf! Can't wait! She is getting thicker and heavier each day, and getting more affectionate to me each day! :love Sometime this week the steers will be slaughtered as we got cut short on pasture space. We are having someone come and do the job, and while he is here, he will do a few of our AGH too. We are planning to have just half of one steer, and have 1 or 2 halves/whole/quarter available to anyone that want some.

Hard to lose a bird, when you know you did it harm. I can sympathize with you on that one. But don't be hard on yourself, it happens.

Emus!! they're so cute!! When will they be able to lay (you did get one of each right?) How much will you sell eggs for? (will you be?) Do they molt like chickens do?

I checked my broody turkey........ she had so many chicken eggs under her that she was pushing out the turkey eggs. So I pulled them all (candled) and discarded all but 3 eggs (I tossed them in the bator.) I checked my broody faverolle....... and she has a ton of eggs too, which are due to hatch soon. Sumatra hen is finally sitting on her clutch in the goat house. (hopefully the goat baby will leave her alone) . And on the inside bator.... 3 have hatched so far (uggo/sumatra) 1 just hatched this morning but I couldn't go down and check on it so I don't know what it is. It's funny the uggo/sumatra chick, I know they're a cross cause they are pure black, but have 5 toes...so thats a dead give away! No more necked necks like "Uggo" unfortunatly. She is so cute to! So I will be bringing these birds to chickenstock!! I think I'm gonna have chicks coming from my ears! Though I wish I was having better luck with my turkey chicks.

Oh boy... that's a closet full of clothes, think I have about........ 1/3 of just one rows worth of clothes! We gave several bags to good will in December and I just filled up another to give away, plus, I went out and got a new suit, so I can give a couple of the other ones in my closet to good will as well. We keep the house at 65 when we're gone or in bed. But I find that if my legs (feet) are cold before bed time, it aggravates my RLS, so I bump the house up to 70 for a while in the evening if I'm feeling chilled. Plus a hot soak in the tub helps a lot. Otherwise the cold doesn't bother me.

I put up the new dog kennel for the Sumatras, in the chicken yard they shared with the Uggos. Now I have to figure out how to get the birds from the run to the new coop (current goat house). I was thinking about building a box tube or finding some culvert they could go through to reach the kennel. I had to hold it away from the building because the eves were lower than the kennel walls.

I'm also going to build my goat stand out of pallet wood... Keeping my fingers crossed that it turns out ok. So many projects.........so little time!

Hi out there, I am new to this forum, I live in the Easern U.P. and I looking for Speckled Sussex Bantams. I would be interested in chicks, Birds, or I might try some hatching eggs. Does anyone know if there is anyone in Michigan that has such a thing??? Thanks

I hate learning the hard way. Well hubby and I went out and really took a good look at him and I didn't do it but I think I may have caused him to hurt himself because he was babying the leg I hurt. It's the left leg and it is broke. I will have to have my husband cull him. Dang!! So his left leg is broke and the right one I hurt,

I am so stupid sometimes. He is a sweet roo to. I picked him up and felt all along the leg when I got to the top you can feel where it is broke and a piece of a ball joint or whatever it is was completely loose from the leg. I think he did it jumping from the roost, To high for a big boy like him I should have thought of that, oh man I don't think I can live with myself.
So sorry about your rooster..

, dont beat yourself up.. its not like you set out to do it on purpose.
I just found this thread and wanted to stop in and say Hi. I'm in Davison. I haven't had chickens for a few years.. but picked some up this year..2each of ISABrowns Barred Rock Black Australorp and a couple EE. They are about 4 weeks old and just put 16 Marans in the bator last week. This is my first time trying to hatch eggs......should be interesting.
Welcome matt, and good luck with your hatch...

love those emus ..

to all the newbies!!! Great place to talk to other crazy chicken people. Matt, I'm in Davison Twp. Where are you??

What a BEAUTIFUL day!! Took the dogs for a long walk and enjoyed hearing the birds sing.

Love the chicks and emu pic!

Tucker is a great name.

Hope you all enjoy the day!

Hi everyone! I'm new here and thought I should introduce myself. My name is Becca and my hubby and I live in the Zeeland area. We have a 15 month old daughter, three big rescued mix breed dogs, and 35 9-11 week old chicks! We have eight Amber Links, nine SLWs, four Jersey Giants, four Australorps, and six Easter Eggers all from Townline, and I have four Black Copper Marans from a really nice breeder in Ada. Unfortunately three of my four straight run Marans ended up being roos and one of my EEs is too so I might need to rehome one or two roosters soon here. :-( unless four roosters and 31 hens is an ok ratio?

Anyway I have really enjoyed this forum so far! It good to 'meet' you all.

Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full

Naked sheep

My grow-out pen in the barn "garage" that used to be the original barn. I haven't encroached into the lawn mower space yet so it's all good. Most all the wood is from a large skid a delivery guy left me with (not complaining!). They seemed to do fine overnight with a low of 33°. They were all cuddled under the light this morning. I'd turn it off but the lower level of the barn is still really cold despite the warm sun outside. There's a pop door in the far corner that leads out into the chicken run. I am going to section the run off so the little guys can go outside without getting picked on by the "old" ladies but still be part of the flock as it were. The big coop is on the other side of that old partition. The heat lamp is inside a cage that is connected to the roof of the pen with other added security measures in place. The big wet spot on the floor is from their nipple waterer. Need to find something to sit under that still.

Open the door and they all come to greet me, so friendly. I don't remember who I was talking to about gender at 5 wks., forgive me, but the one in the upper left and the one in the middle are two of my BO/EE girls. Almost no combs to speak of at 5 1/2 weeks.

it was me, i see what you mean on the combs.

Lady, they must be so much more comfortable!

4 roosters to 31 hens is not too much for the hens, but they may as they get older have issues with each other. Sometimes when roosters are raised together they get along just fine even as adults.
