Well, I'm happy you posted them Darron. They are so cute and different. Put a smile on my face. Great way to start the day.

Try not to beat yourself up too much over lessons learned. If not for mistakes, none of us learn.

Poor chicks. The kids have gotten really good about being careful with their feet. Oldest is 5 and youngest is 17 months.

Today is the first day of the turkey season and hopefully at least one of the toms who spent the winter enjoying my hospitality (and corn) will stop by to say hello.

One thing people must accept if they are going to raise chickens is that some are going to die. No matter how carefully we are illness and injuries are bound to happen. Rather than feeling bad about a bird's death look upon it as a learning experience that makes you better at animal husbandry.

Laura, while Tucker is an excellent name for a dog, I think Cat would be a much better choice. Imagine the look on people's faces as you call your pet, "here Kitty, Kitty" and a dog shows up.

As I write this my old JRT lies in the floor not far from my feet. She is getting thin, her brown markings are almost faded out, her hearing is shot, and her eyes are clouded. She has difficulty judging distances which often results in her hitting walls or the edge of steps. Negotiating stairs quite often ends with her falling back down them and it is heartbreaking to see. Yet she doesn't appear to be in any pain and still runs around like she did as a puppy. The only difference is that those spurts of energy are short lived and require a nap afterwards. Come to think of it that is not unlike me.

A crummy picture, but here's one of the blue showgirl chicks I woke up to find in the incubator this morning :)

Awww! Little Chicks! I really hope I have a BUNCH of little chicks next weekend. Wednesday is the beginning of lockdown, and hatching should commence on Friday or Saturday.

We got most of one of our meaty tractors framed in and fenced this weekend. After crunching the numbers and considering materials, we went with this A-frame style tractor. It was the cheapest to build according to my math, we won't have to worry about snow collapsing and breaking things, will hopefully not get blown away in the wind, AND I can stand up inside it! We are going to tarp the roof since right now my husband thinks that it'll just be for summertime use. (It also has the benefit that if I get too overrun with chicks and can't get rid of them before winter, we could put metal roofing or something similar on it and park it on the south side of our big coop. Shhhh. Don't tell!)
