Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

She doesn't know the sex of any of them. I'm sure your duck would be happy for the company - I've added to my flock with no issues (except for too many boys chasing too few girls!).
Let me know if you are interested and I will get you her contact info.

Opa... 48? Hmm... Thought I'd get a dozen... Then I thought, a few of these, some of those. I now have 57. 6 eggs under broodies, so... 63 soon. 1/2 that number are immature yet. 1/4 of that number are roos and cockerels.

So, I went to lock up the birds this evening, could not find my silkie hen I got from mom2. Looked everywhere and found a nest. I think they may be my pink skinned silkies eggs as they are a color and shape that I am not used to. They are slightly tinted and elongated. Going to float them to see if they are good, and set a nest box in the spot she found. The old metal dog entrance to the garage. Surprised that possums or coons haven't found them. I didn't get them all out, it was getting dark. But anyway, back to Vanilla. I had just about given up the ghost on here and went to get the steam cleaner out of the jeep when she comes out of the hosta. Yes, I looked in the hosta. Apparently, not well enough.

Florus has no tail... I don't know which roo he ticked off, but which ever it was, his tail is a mangled mess of feather remnants, and all the feathers are broke on his feet. Stupid faverolles. He's lucky I like him or... Well he's lucky I like him.

My phoenix are no longer confined to a run. It is pointless to try and keep them penned. I have witnessed them one time too many climbing fence to sit on top, then get out, then be to bird brained to get back in. The big birds don't bother them much, but will need to have the shed cleaned and phoenix run built by next spring. I will get new pics up in the next few days.

I feel like an icepick is being introduced to my temple. Have a nice night ya'll.

Sam-

I beat you here this morning. Drinking my coffee, listening to the rain. I sure do hope it is a little cooler today- not having a/c really stinks.

Two more days then two off. Im counting down. I had one of the worst days in my career yesterday. I was screamed at and cussed at by a customer who called me a crackhead and said the company should not hire crackheads- all of this at the top of her lungs in my full lobby. Ive been there ten years and that was the first time I have been insulted like that. Not the first time Ive been insulted, and Ive been called much worse many times- but the first time Ive dealt with it in the veterinary field.

Last year our tomatoes did poorly, this year its the peppers. I really dont think my pepper plants have grown at all since I put them in the ground. My tomato plants are growing nicely though. My beans are doing well. My cucumbers are making a comeback- poor things were about dead, I left them for dead. Then I noticed that there was the smallest bit of new growth, and I think almost overnight they started thriving and growing. Now I think they are doing very well.

I planted hostas and lillies and grass seed in the chicken pen- the best soil of the yard -and everything is doing fabulous. This overnight rain just makes everything greener and I just know if plants could sing, there would be a chorus out there.

Everyone have a great day. Time for me to get ready to face whatever today brings.

As I sit here watching "Top Shot" I'm reminded of the value of using the DVR. For some reason my body has started operating at weird times. I can't think of one valid reason to get up at 0430 yet lately that seems to be when I awake. I've finished a cup of coffee left from last night so I guess it's time to start a new pot.

Just before dark the wind was finally calm enough to spray the orchard. The trees are loaded this year and I want to do everything possible to insure a bountiful harvest. After last year's abysmal harvest of 4 apples having a crop that will allow us to freeze and dehydrate a year's supply would be welcomed. Hopefully there will be enough for pressing into cider as well.

Wow! I sure hope ur day goes better today.

I actually had my first cup of java at 0200. Once again sleep is alluding me.

My peppers are doing a bit better. But this is by far the worst year ever. Only the weeds & skeeters seem to be thriving!

On the way to work now...sure like riding in our Michivan! Lets me relax and read and post!

Have a great day all!:D

I picked up 2 ducks yesterday, both 1yr old ladies. 1 is a rouen cross, the other a blue sweedish. The swed was very nice looking, but the rouenX had some problems. Firstly, the vent area was a little dirty, so I thought it might have had mites. Not too bad of mites and didn't see any specks moving, but still... don't want to deal with mites. Secondly, pretty sure it has bumble foot... One foot had 2 spots of the cartilage like chunks. A rather large one on the base, and a smaller one by the toe.

The boy that was selling the ducks though was ADORABLE. I'm a sucker for kids. I bought both ducks anyways, but asked for a discounted price on the rouenX. The bumble foot is going to cause it problems. We have a hen with that and have had to deal with it on a couple occasions. Plus I'd be treating both ducks for mites just in case & that's worth a discount. The ducks were very reasonably priced at $8 ea in the first place, I paid $12 for the two. I dusted them as soon as I got home... but also gave them a pool so I'm pretty sure they washed it all off.

I need some advice from you duck owners though as I'm rather new to owning ducks and can only go on my chicken knowledge... These two new ducks that I got yesterday seem to have dirty feathers. The previous owners did not have any pools out for their ducks. All the ducks (& there were a lot) were all separated by assorted breeding pens with dirt floors and little huts, but no pools for bathing/swimming. I figured that is why the feathers were dirty... & NOT water tight.

Our ducks that we raised will go into their pool daily & the water just beads and rolls off them, like it should. These new ducks went into their pool (after looking at it for a while) and then instantly started dipping & bathing & splashing like it was the best thing. Only their feathers got soaked, a little "drowned rat" 'ish, and the poor kids had to flap & shake like dogs when their bath was done.

So my questions: Do you think I'm right that they were just dirty? Will the feathers get better as they start to bathe and prune themselves? How long to you suppose it will take?... OR do you think there is something else going on with them?
