Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Question peeps: The comb on my roo that i saved is rolled over since the ordeal. Has anyone else had this happen and will it go back?

As to the concert, no funding! I work a lot but this unfortunate schedule i had my hours slashed. :( So time but no money, or money but no time........ But that don't mean i ain't a-wishing! :p

Sounds good. What kind of tomatoes did you buy? My paste tomatoes haven't ripened yet - still. I'm just getting purple cherokee and striped german at the moment and canning the ones we don't eat, as we go. I'm worried this rain is going to split the tomatoes on the vine before they get a chance to ripen. Even the farm market down the road hasn't got much in yet, just some of the generic commercial varieties.

I canned four quarts last week and ran out of jars. Then I remembered the neighbor had four quart jars of mine they told me were ready to be picked up. Usually they just drop off stuff at my door, no problem....so this sounds like a trap. The thing is, if I knock on their door, they'll pull me in and I won't be seen for an hour or so. The old lady pours 10oz. glasses of juice and practically forces cookies and brownies, even if I refuse. I don't do sugar like that. When I was a kid I could metabolize it but not so much anymore. Now it goes straight to the diabetes account... and the hips I'm sure. They're nice old folks and all but I need a REALLY GOOD excuse not to go in before I even attempt to extricate the jars. I'm avoiding it so much that I went out and bought 1/2 gallon freezer tubs to process the tomatoes that came in this week. Might buy some more quart jars today when I'm in town too.
I am not sure what kind they are other than "canning" tomatoes. They aren't romas.
Went out to my mother's yesterday and made spaghetti sauce! I think we got 8qts out of the bunch. I sampled some when we were filling the jars and YUM!

I
I believe I have enough canned tomatoes but would like to try making my own spaghetti sauce. I have found that the store bought kind does not agree with me. Probably because they all have onions. I have started making my own chili and taco seasonings because all the pre packaged kinds have onion powder.
Jake, RJRJen has lovely hares.
Sorry but this made me

So bummed!! My tomatoes didn't do well at all this year. In fact... my entire garden except for the corn & sunflowers did horribly. This is the first year in as long as I can remember that I didn't get enough tomatoes to do a year supply of canned tomatoes & salsa. I've only been managing a couple ripe tomatoes a week... all the rest (peppers, cucumbers, pickles, squashes, melons,etc...) failed to thrive. :( I suppose I will have to buy a bunch of fresh tomatoes to can or go with **gasp** store bought for the next year. Just need to find a place close by that I can buy a couple bushels. Home canned are so much better... We're not looking forward to a year of store bought cans. :/

We got peaches here!! There's a large peach orchard not too far from here & I stopped in yesterday and picked up a 1/2 peck for eating & making a peach cobbler from this week. They're perfectly ripe and so delicious. Since my normal fall canning schedule is a complete mess this year... I have a TON of extra canning jars just sitting around unused. I might stop back there and get some to can. Mmm...
Where in west Mi are you located? I got mine at Magicland which is between Newaygo and Fremont. They have a really nice set up.

This is my first year getting any significant amounts of honey from my honeybees. It is so nice to finally be able to have fresh honey produced from my own backyard! I got just over 20lbs after it was removed from the wax.

Some of the filtered honey in jars. My flash wasn't cooperating, but it is a fairly light gold color.

This is one of my keeper Araucana chicks, too. I haven't had many keeper chicks this year, I'm being pretty choosey. It is black, double tufted, and rumpless!

I'm home from yet another court appearance. The "maybe" chickens ticket and the butterfly garden ticket were dismissed. The "probation violation" ticket for the above "charges" was NOT dismissed. That is being held over for another date.

On another note, Mike was there for sentencing for his chicken "crime". He was given the minimal fine and 6 months of non-reporting probation. Same crime, polar opposite sentencing. Sounds like discrimination to me.

There is another person cited for chickens. He stopped by on Sunday for advice.

And for what it is worth, there were over 80 cases on the docket today and every last one of them was an ordinance violation. I guess if you can't tax the people you can certainly fine them.

This is crazy!!!
I received notice in writing for chicken violation. I think we are ready to fight this one. We meet the criteria for RTF protection. MAEAP verification in progress, LLC is in progress, we are selling our culled Roos, and we finally have EGGS! Woo hoo! Our first eggs came Monday. So now we are "in business" selling our farm product!

RAZ, I think you need to join your township board and change some of this shenanigans. We are already talking about this subject in my house. We will be running for township seats at the next election.
