Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I am fortunate that my oldest son found a 100 year old all metal press for me. The framework is cast iron, the worm gears steel, and the can and sieve basket are stainless. A cotton bag is placed in the sieve basket to filter the juice. For grinding the apples I mounted a garbage disposal in the bottom of a plastic lug. Works great.

Aw nuts. I wish i could go. Me and my sis like them too, but we both work a ton. Think the tickets will be sold out in minutes?

On sale right now!!! GA was $59 each.... ($39 really with the 12$ "handling" fee)

Down at the filmore in detroit! If you go let me know we can meet for eats!

We'll be just back from vacation but I think I'll extend it another couple days...

Just had a conversation with an old college friend... she was suggesting we do a private study at the college on mask making......... I am so tempted..... will need to do a lot of research on this first. But how fun would that be!!

Hey! Does anyone have a suggestion for a good source for garlic scapes? (or whatever they're called?) I'd like to try planting some garlic this fall.

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure you can harvest scapes from any softneck garlic type which are available from most catalogs for fall planting. I ordered mine a few weeks ago.

Yesterday I finished canning the bushel of tomatoes that I bought. I managed to get 26 pints of crushed tomatoes. I still have a few jars left from last year. I look forward to getting some fresh apples as I have not had any in a very long time.

So bummed!! My tomatoes didn't do well at all this year. In fact... my entire garden except for the corn & sunflowers did horribly. This is the first year in as long as I can remember that I didn't get enough tomatoes to do a year supply of canned tomatoes & salsa. I've only been managing a couple ripe tomatoes a week... all the rest (peppers, cucumbers, pickles, squashes, melons,etc...) failed to thrive. :( I suppose I will have to buy a bunch of fresh tomatoes to can or go with **gasp** store bought for the next year. Just need to find a place close by that I can buy a couple bushels. Home canned are so much better... We're not looking forward to a year of store bought cans. :/

Peaches will be here next week, so I'll get to play with those, hopefully after the kids start school and I don't have as many "helpers." It's a messy job that I'd just as soon do myself.

We got peaches here!! There's a large peach orchard not too far from here & I stopped in yesterday and picked up a 1/2 peck for eating & making a peach cobbler from this week. They're perfectly ripe and so delicious. Since my normal fall canning schedule is a complete mess this year... I have a TON of extra canning jars just sitting around unused. I might stop back there and get some to can. Mmm...

YUUUUCK! My hens have lice. Just the hens. Not the chicks, thank goodness. Looks like tomorrow will be a big cleaning/treating/worming day! My question now is, do I really need to clip the feathers with the egg clumps on them, or no? Some threads make mention of it, and others don't.

well, there's always the chance they'll hatch....

Are they moulting? Is it a lot of feathers? If they are moulting just let them fall off natural.

As long as you keep treating the nits will hatch and be killed, it's just unsightly. I treat the second time at the end of the week.. I have an adoptee that has the same issues, but i'm lucky as she's moulting. The ones that aren't moulted i'm gonna hand pluck. (hopefully it' s only a few!) That way they grow back and i'm not stuck with stubbles.

I'm unlucky that i have a ton of hair that attracts lice. They are the bird kind so don't STAY on me, but they do get there and it's creepy and more than a little gross. So i don't like the nits in any way shape or form.
