Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey! Does anyone have a suggestion for a good source for garlic scapes? (or whatever they're called?) I'd like to try planting some garlic this fall.
My Hardneck garlic scaped in June-early July, and the bulbs ready for harvest late July, which is normal for our climate. The scapes are useful as an early mild garlic tasting garnish, and that's about all.
Look at local farmers' markets right now thru Sept. for bulbs. Plant the biggest cloves in late October.

And lots more sites. Garlic is really great in the garden!

Its all about greed and control....

I was just listening to Peter Gabriel's "We do what we're told/ Milgram's 37" the other day and thinking about this. I'm wondering if, at the township level, we don't see some of that behavior going on (like that of the Milgam experiment) but more importantly (and similarly), behavior like that studied in the Stanford prison experiment. We've got average citizens taking on the role of authority and abusing it. Anyone can run for township board or councils and power trips are to be expected. Maybe Garden City has a bad case of it. Would be interesting to know if these psychological issues were going on.

That train of thought could take a lot of different tracks, including some that could get political.

BYC frowns on that kind of thing and has shut down threads for getting too "rambunctious". I suggest we take political rants, psychological profiles and other such opinions off-line (PM or e-mail) so we don't offend the sensitive.

But don't give up hope or your outrage at the way things are. We are here to support and educate each other as we raise our chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, goats, cows and all the other critters that sustain our common goals.

That is why I have published my saga, it is something that could happen to others here. The support of this group has sustained me.

Thank you all.

Rather than go through all of the incubation threads, is there a quick answer here?

The incubator is on a table that is a tad wobbly. The cats jump on the table for a second or 4.
Will that slight wobble affect my eggs? They are day 5 and I turn them by hand 4 times a day. Eggs are positioned on their sides in a paper carton. (Is that enough detail for an answer?)

My giant finally is drinking water and ate a hard boiled egg. Whew. I think she might pull through. Eye is opening. Still really rattley but eating and drinking makes me very happy. And she's chatty again. Not lethargic and quiet like she was this morning. Not 100% but better than she was this morning. Hopefully after a couple more days in quarantine and tylan she will be good to go back into the flock! Think happy healthy chicken thoughts for me!

you dont need garlic scapes to plant garlic in your garden, I go to the farmers market and buy some heads of garlic, break them up and plant them, that way you know they will grow in your area..
did that last year.

oh and i forgot you plant them in the fall..

That honey looks so yummy.. congrats on your harvest.

RaZ I'd personally make sure that the table was stable, JIC. BUT that said, the cats here were jumping up and down right next to the bator, even getting on it on occassion, warm top. Finally got them to stay off, then they'd lay on top of the rabbit cage and suck up the heat from the lamp. I Honestly don't think you'll have a problem, though, since you have them in a carton, so they're not hitting against each other.

I am fortunate that my oldest son found a 100 year old all metal press for me.  The framework is cast iron, the worm gears steel, and the can and sieve basket are stainless.  A cotton bag is placed in the sieve basket to filter the juice.  For grinding the apples I mounted a garbage disposal in the bottom of a plastic lug.  Works great.

I guess I'll just have to keep visiting the cider mill for now. :/

This is my first year getting any significant amounts of honey from my honeybees. It is so nice to finally be able to have fresh honey produced from my own backyard! I got just over 20lbs after it was removed from the wax. Some of the filtered honey in jars. My flash wasn't cooperating, but it is a fairly light gold color. This is one of my keeper Araucana chicks, too. I haven't had many keeper chicks this year, I'm being pretty choosey. It is black, double tufted, and rumpless!
That honey looks DELICIOUS!!!
