Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I've been eying the "wild grape" vines over by my birds for making jelly. They are a wild grape/ tame grape cross or something because they are big like store grapes, but have the seed and "booger" of the wild; whatever they are they sure pack a lot of flavor!

So far my birds have been the only enjoyers of them but i wanna try making some jelly. I've made jam, but no jelly...... but i want to figure out how to go au naturele and not use "pectin"

Well if you don't want to use pectin, why not try making WINE! It's pectin free and natural and can be enjoyed so much more than jelly, or even with Jelly!

We do it ourselves - too costly to have them done by someone else. We have a system. Friend comes by with his birds, and Himself and friend slaughter and clean them. Then Himself brings them to the refrigerator (in the garage) for aging, then in a few days I de-bone the breasts, remove the legs and package in vacu-seal bags and freeze. I use the carcass and wings to make stock, and duck fat.

We also did 34+ rabbits, 46 Cornish X, and two young goats for the freezer. We are styling!

The dog gets the feet, heads and lungs. She likes rabbit feet and ears too, and she ate the goat heads and hooves. We try not to waste stuff

do you have a plucker? That seems to me to be the most timely part of proscesing

THAT SOUNDS GOOD

I'd be willing to drive to Munsell's. I'll have to look them up and figure out if my schedule will work with theirs. Do you take the birds in live and they do it all? I'm not queasy but I would just rather not slaughter any of this bunch myself. I'm hoping my Muscovies sell because I like them too much to take them. I just have a few chickens that would be making the trip.
Thank you!

Take them live and they do all of the work.
You bring the birds in the morning and pick up the freezer packs in the afternoon.

Since I came from so far away and had a small order, they did me a favour and processed the birds right away. I dropped them off and went into Howell for breakfast. By the time I was done, they were done as well.

I think that was an exception but I certainly appreciate what they did. That kind of customer service is why I recommend them.

Tip of the Day.

When setting up a game camera, make sure that your bird feeder is not is the field of view.
Unless you actually want 140 pictures of sparrows.

If anyone would be interested in a young salmon faverolles roo...I'm deciding which of the six to keep and the other five will be removed in another month or two. I'm near Manistee. They are currently 12 weeks old - hatched from Fancy Favie's stock. Please send me a message for details and pics if interested!

As RaZ said, you make an appt, drop off live & pickup at end of day. I call it freezer day camp...

BTW...I live 2 miles from Munsell's :). SO, if your schedule were such that you could only drop them off, but not make it back the same day, I could pick them up & keep them in my deep freeze til you could make it back....
