Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Its been a good week heree, this weekend is the annual huge crafts show taking over the center of town, the population of Harrisville about triples for the next three days. Something for everyone here.
I used to go to Lincoln every Labour Day weekend for the pig roast, hay ride and other shenanigans, the craft show in Harrisville was part of the fun.

Did bumble foot surgery thus morning. Soaked her feet in warm Epsom salt for about 15 minutes before going about things. One scab peeled right off and I didn't see any signs of stuff under it.

Yup, Muscovy meat is the best! We had over 150 last year, many of which are in the freezer. But, we also have a large Asian population here, so we have no problem selling live ducks (still for meat though).

And they really are great at getting the mossies and fly population down.

Sorry about those scratches - a pain you won't forget in a hurry!
I listed several of my Muscovy drakelets for sale on CL but I listed them a bit high. I don't really want to sell them but I have too many boys. They have gorgeous patterns and I would love to see them go to 4H-ers (I offered discounts to anyone who contacted me who plans on showing them). I am too attached to them to sell them as meat birds, though I've been told several places will pay top $ for Muscovy meat. They have really had an impact on the mosquito population around my house and yard. They are even working on the flies back near the horse barn. They are hilarious to watch as they chase and jump at the horseflies. They are so much clumsier than the chickens. I made the mistake of not wearing gloves when I was rounding them up and crating the drakelets today - they have wicked claws - and I am going to have wicked scars on my hands to prove it. And I knew better . . .

Holy Muscovies Batman! That's a lot of ducks to have processed. I can't even find anyone nearby to process any poultry (closest I've found is at least an hour and a half away). I guess there's one in the Brown City/Imlay City area. And one in the thumb (Caro). There used to be one just past Durand but I can't find a listing for them so they may not be in business any more (had never heard anything good about them anyway).

Have you thought about Munsell's here in Howell? Know that's still about an hour away...but they do a good job..

Quote: We do it ourselves - too costly to have them done by someone else. We have a system. Friend comes by with his birds, and Himself and friend slaughter and clean them. Then Himself brings them to the refrigerator (in the garage) for aging, then in a few days I de-bone the breasts, remove the legs and package in vacu-seal bags and freeze. I use the carcass and wings to make stock, and duck fat.

We also did 34+ rabbits, 46 Cornish X, and two young goats for the freezer. We are styling!

The dog gets the feet, heads and lungs. She likes rabbit feet and ears too, and she ate the goat heads and hooves. We try not to waste stuff

( i free feed, the dang bowl ran empty for a whole couple hours and the birds thought they were dying )

He isn't exactly a very large bird, either. But the only one to get sick; idk if he's the only idiot to grind them, or the weakest of the bunch.
