Green Eggs & Ham . . . . .
400

Well, I was bad today. Even though I traded away a Light Brahma rooster (for canning tomatoes!) and sold a young Muscovy drake (I think 9 out of the 12 young ones I have are boys!!!) AND I constantly complain about the cost of feed, I bought 6 more chickens today. 2 hens and 4 pullets. Two are very pretty EE pullets and the rest are mutt Marans. I'm not getting squat for eggs from my bunch and will probably have to retire my original 7. One of the pullets laid an egg on the hour drive home even. I am just starting to get really dark chocolate eggs from the 16 - 20 week old FBC Marans in the quarantine pen, though. Five so far in the past week. And from the way the rooster in there is going after the EE, I think she will be laying soon, as well.
My friends have been sending over their watermelon rinds, leftover zucchini or cucumber bits, etc. for me to supplement the chickens feed with while they are cooped. Since the chickens ate my garden before it even produced practically. At least I can work on my flower beds and get them back in order without them rearranging everything for me (or eating it) now. The ducks stay close but aren't quite as destructive as the chickens have been.
I listed several of my Muscovy drakelets for sale on CL but I listed them a bit high. I don't really want to sell them but I have too many boys. They have gorgeous patterns and I would love to see them go to 4H-ers (I offered discounts to anyone who contacted me who plans on showing them). I am too attached to them to sell them as meat birds, though I've been told several places will pay top $ for Muscovy meat. They have really had an impact on the mosquito population around my house and yard. They are even working on the flies back near the horse barn. They are hilarious to watch as they chase and jump at the horseflies. They are so much clumsier than the chickens. I made the mistake of not wearing gloves when I was rounding them up and crating the drakelets today - they have wicked claws - and I am going to have wicked scars on my hands to prove it. And I knew better . . . They are people friendly, follow me all over, and come when they are called but they aren't big on being held or picked up. It's going to be fun trying to make salsa this weekend while wearing surgical gloves to protect the cuts.

You Ladies really come up with some funnies, glad there was no coffee in my mouth when I saw these !!

I have had a good week, rehomed the ducks, and two Delaware pullets, now have just two 3 mos old halfway to POL Delaware pullets to go. Very sweet, prefer to eat out of my hand then from the full feeder in front of them !

Anyone with Icelandics I have 2 yearling roosters available for driving here to pick them up. I have several obvious cockerels in the little guys so these two grown guys are available. I need the pen space.

Its been a good week heree, this weekend is the annual huge crafts show taking over the center of town, the population of Harrisville about triples for the next three days. Something for everyone here.

Life goes on, and it is good.

Does anyone fairly local have hen saddles for sale or trade? I've got 3 EE hens that are my rooster's favorites and it shows. I may have to separate them for awhile to give them a break! I'm going to trim his nails tonight after they go to roost and that should help a bit.
