Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Raz, i know this goes against the grain of opinion but i'd help "the foot" that has been struggling . After this long of trying he's obviously not able to make his turn and zip, probably on account of the foot out the hole. If he's too big in general it is hard to make the zip, but could still be a healthy guy. Too long of struggling and he could be too weak to get out on his own?

I like the shower idea.

This stress is why i think i'll stick to broodies! Nova had to do a call to tell me vocally to "step away from the bator!" But i did end up having to snatch out a chick that sprained her leg terribly getting it stuck between egg remnants. It was at the end of the hatch though and only one was still going, he made it out OK.

I would help the chick with the leg out. Its malpositioned to hatch and may not get out on its own. Start by enlarging the original hole and stop immediately if you hit blood. Soak paper towel in 99 degree water and put one in the incubator when you open it and use the other to pick up and hold the egg you are working on.

I am with the above 2 in that he/she may be struggling too much to be able to get zipped, and I would help the leg out, too.

Having only my own experience and what I have read on here, I was a bad girl. I opened the bator a lot to help mousten the membranes when they looked really dry. (Q-tip and warm water) I kept water brewed in my coffee pot and added some of that to the bator to replace lost humidity. So far, my only non-hatchers were all quitters except for 2, who just never pipped.

I did intervene. I used the warm wet paper towel trick to rehydrate the shell and membrane. The membrane was very thick. I think that was hindering the zip.

Taprock and her reading program are now famous!

thanks for posting this!! congrats, Tap

Dying to know how the hatch is going???
I swear off hatching chicks, every three weeks or so. And some how eggs still find their way in there and my finger nails keep getting sorter and the coop just keeps growing.
I think I have a problem ????
it is called an addiction I think some one started a chick anonymous, maybe you should join

On a lighter note. A Northerner was traveling in the deep south. Since Christmas was only a few weeks away he was not surprised to see an elaborate nativity scene prominently displayed behind the counter. However one thing did confuse him so he asked the counter man why what seemed to be the three wise men were wearing fire helmets.

The reply was because in the bible it says the wise men came from afar. Sounds logical to me.
I'm a little slow thees days, but

gads, been gone all day thought by now you would have pics of a bunch of little chicks, how is big foot doing?
guess this is why I let broodys do it, (that and I can't afford an incubator) PLUS I have no self control

Hey Michigan folks -
I'd like you all to know that there is a meeting of the Commission of Agriculture in Benton Harbor next Wednesday, beginning at 9 am.  I'll be there, asking them to not make changes to the GAAMPS that will very significantly weaken our protection under Right to Farm.  The place to be is here:

Southwest Michigan Research & Extension Center
Jordan Tatter Conference Center
1791 Hillandale Road, Benton Harbor

And then the other thing that is going on is that the Bakers Green Acres case against the DNR and the Attorney General will be going to trial.  The simplified version of the story is that the DNR defined all kinds of pigs (straight tail OR curly tail, etc.) as invasive species, outlawed them, and then created a narrow exception for the kinds of pigs grown on factory farms.  Baker is suing, and will get his day in court.  You can read about it here:  http://bakersgreenacres.com

And while you're there note that harvest time for pigs is coming up, and they have pigs to sell.  They are working hard to stay in business as pig farmers, and I'm pretty sure could use our support.

Finally, just want to say that there are lots of ag issues in Michigan right now, and not all of them have to do with chickens.  Like the Bakers Green Acres case.  I started a new discussion forum with a focus on Michigan, instead of a focus on chickens.  http://www.michigansmallfarmforum.com

Anyone else going? I'm near Grand Rapids and would love to give a ride/get a ride if anyone would carpool. I'm planning on going...

It's been 4 hours. What's it looking like in the incubator now? I've been reading your updates and am feeling anticipation for you!

Shelly still has a bit of shell and membrane stuck but seems okay but weak.
Saturday looks good and Zippy likes to huddle with Shelly.

One egg looks like a pip is starting and the other egg wobbles around. Two eggs may be duds or maybe just slower.

Too much anxiety for my liking.
