Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I love the names. Good luck to all of them, and to you!

Just reading your posts confirmed that I would have to leave for 2 days near hatch date. We plan to get some fertile eggs to put under our silkie in the spring. I'll probably have to set a tent up next to her. ;)

Well, Bad Broody managed to hatch out 2 eggs (both chicks were rescued as soon as out all the way), one yesterday and one today (2 and 3 days late), cracked another egg some time after candling and killed the chick inside, and made one egg completely disappear. She is in the broody box re-acquainting herself with her primary job (egg laying), and the two SFH chicks are in with the 14 imports - all happy, active a doing well. Whew. All done hatching for the year.

I have a non chicken story for you, but I know you are dog lovers. I thought of you Sillychicken when I heard this. A friend was driving home and almost hit a large black dog. She went back and tried to coax it closer and all it would do was cower. She ended up taking it home with her. It is a pure Great Dane that is skin and bones and looked like it had been dumped after having puppies. She took it home and made sure it had food and water. This was on Friday. Today it gave birth to a puppy under her porch. Her SIL said she would take them and lovingly crawled under the porch and got acquainted before she took them. Now at her new home she has given birth to a total of 6 pups. She was so skinny before she had the pups I hate to think how skinny she must be now. It is nice to know there are animal lovers out there that will go out of there way to care for an abandoned one.

Raz, we named a chick Sheldon because its shell was stuck to it for the whole time it was in the incubator. Our Sheldon is the best little hen. Glad everything turned out ok. It's so fun to watch wiggling eggs.

A drake would be great.  My girl is a white.  I have an acre pond for them to play on (though I find the muscovies enjoy roaming with the chickens a lot more than the other ducks).  Only thing would be finding a day to get up to you.  You're a good two hours from here...

If you want to see pics, I have a couple posted on the Moscovy board. I can put up some I just took a few days ago, too. I only have one weekday off this week (Thursday) and I have to work Saturday morning but I have no other plans this weekend other than projects at home. Where are you coming from? I may be able to meet up with you to help reduce your drive a bit. I was asking $20 each but I would go $10 for a fellow BYCer.

Awwwwwwwwwww.....Poor girl... so glad someone took her in, I don't know how a dog in that kind of condition could survive birthing let alone feeding pups.......... I'd gladly take a pup once they're old enough! How far up up north are they?

a friend has decided to build a little coop to take my poor outcast Polish chick for me. she is going to take a few other pullets with her. she is thinking the Buff Orpington, the RIR and one of the EEs. they all came together initially, but since my older ISAs hate the Polish, they haven't seen her in weeks. i really hope there isn't too much trouble getting them to live together nicely when there are only four of them.

on the other hand, this is one of the friends that initially went into the chickens with us (there were three couples) so we've been splitting everything anyway, costs and eggs. and they are definitely going to a good home.

i for one enjoyed the brisk weekend, especially the rain yesterday. a nice gentle sprinkle all day, just enough to limit the work i could get done. so very relaxing.

I had a pretty good weekend too.

Saturday there was a pig roast/music jam at my old collage to celebrate the life of my professor and friend who passed away recently. It was hard to keep a dry eye all the while laughing, walking through the art studio, reminiscing about all the fun times we had. There is still clay stuck to the ceiling from one of our many clay fights, 30 yrs ago! LOL! There were only 3 of us, a guy, me and another girl that had majored in his classes, Metalsmithing and Sculpture. (kids were pretty much weeded out once they got to the advance classes). The other girl ended up as his wife after she had gone on and finished grad school at Cranbrook Art Academy (I went there too) They were a perfect fit for each other. She and I are talking about either doing an independent study or teaching an independent class, at the college on mask making. After the party, I suggested to a few of my class mates we finish the evening with food/drinks at a local restaurant...well, the 6 to 8 people ended up to over 30 as the table grew longer and longer! It was a great evening. The school is going to allow us to put in a sculptural garden in Johns memory... but it will be up to all of us to raise the money etc... I hope to participate in both the jury for submitted art or maybe put something in myself.... maybe.

Sunday total opposite.. got called in to work again for a silly issue. but hey, 5 hrs of OT will be handy!

Raz, how is your hatching going. is this your first time hatching. i know my first time was suspense full because i didnt know what i was doing. and second time was easier, the third sure was a peace of cake.. its all a learning curve and getting to know your incubator. hoping you have a successful hatch.

Naglady, this is my first time hatching. Most likely my last time as well. Far too much stress for me.

Two chicks hatched just fine, the third could not get out of the shell and after nearly a day I helped. It is very weak. I moved the 3 to the brooder this morning and used a syringe to get water into the weak chick.

There are 4 eggs left in the incubator. Yesterday, 2 wiggled from time to time but nothing has happened. I'll leave them be for a couple of day.
