x4 on hoping for speedy noneventful recoveries for everyone surgery bound, been there and done that and it was worth it. Mara the only poultry that I know eat box elder bugs are guineas.

Greetings and Salutations,
I have been back for a few months but just now got the chicken urge back. So I thought I would jump back on here and look up some of my old friends. I hope you’re all doing well! And I hope the people that were nice enough to help me out and took my chicks before I got deployed are happy with them and they are good producers. I plan on building a brand new coop this coming spring. I can’t wait!!! I may be looking to some of you to buy chicks from. I’m only looking to raise about 8 this go around (but I’m going to build the coop to hold 20…lol).
Enough rambling…..It’s good to be back here!
Welcome home

Peeps is my what I thought Muscovy but now know black Swedish duck very loud so maybe girl. The one that had a broken leg. All better now but still living in the house with supervised visits out side. Getting big enough now to stay with the rest probably this weekend. Anyway if I point at anything its attack time.

York, I'm so very sorry! Last spring we lost ten nice hens one day, to a daytime fox attack. A few days later, a neighbor was able to shoot him; very sick mangy guy. We kept our remaining flock locked in thier pen for a couple of weeks; you need a good safe night coop, and a reasonably secure run, for times when predators are too close. I alerted all the neighbors, especially those who had birds/livestock, and set livetraps. Everyone was alert, which worked to get the culprit. Several of us saw him, but couldn't get a shot. Again, so sorry. I've got a couple of year old hens availably, and a cockrel, if you want company for your lonely girl. Don't give up! Do the best you can, and enjoy your birds. They will have great lives, especially compared to factory farm victims. Mary

So sorry York, please don't give up! We know when we sign on for this venture we will have losses. No one told us how hard it was though. I totally relate to the lifetime dog, I buried mine a few yrs ago. Rebuild, never surrender!

Thank you so, so much everyone for the words of sympathy. It does help. This is the one place I knew people would understand--I know many of you have had bad losses too, and many of you have known your chickens as individuals and as pets. I am working through my grief as best I can. I know I will get there. And I shouldn't delay too much longer in getting Bonita some company. I might try her in with the turkey and the peahen temporarily. The turkey always cooped up with the chickens, so he should be fine. We'll see how the peahen feels about chickens. It's not a permanent solution--the room in the barn they're in is plenty big, about 10 by 20, but doesn't have much in the way of ventilation--but Bonita might perk up a bit having some avian friends.

Mary, it touches me more than I can say that you would offer me some of your birds, knowing what happened to my last ones. This group is the best!

Yorkchick...so sorry for your loss ...

You are right, this IS the one place where not only will people understand what you are going through, but offer help, advice and support.

BYC Friends is not just term with this thread...it is "friends" in the true sense of the word with people that are willing to go out of their way to help others; be it simply with words or in a more tangible manner.

I have never met such a great group of caring people :hugs
