Roger is gone... I can't find him. I can not find a feather trail, no body, absolutely nothing. I searched my yard, the neighbors on both sides and down to Bill's and nothing. Just nothing... He's just gone... I am so devastated... I know he's just a chicken, but he was a darn good chicken... What would take off with a chicken and not leave a trace? I even went searching in the woods down the animal trails and nothing... He was there this morning when I let everyone out and went to work, but not when I got home. I hope that he didn't get stolen... He'd be easy to steal, but not much of a meal...
so sorry Nova, hope he turns up...just seems like there should be some sign

no guess from me on roo or hen. just hope they don't crow.

Nova so sorry about roger. I'd say hawk. Took 4 of our bantams with no trace except one feather I found. We have SO many hawk lately, two dead on the road today.

Feed question, how much feed do you give a laying hen? I read .3 # daily, available all the time, feed only at night, feed only in the morning. I'm confused now. I want to only put out what is needed as I am having chipmunk issues. I can find charts that show the protein levels needed but not amounts. Anyone Seen one or can tell me what to do?

On a good note I think I have finally defeated-my northern fowl mites. Ever since last fall and some friendly wild birds my big coop has been plagued by
Them. I have done everything the msu vets told me to and it was still a problem. In June I had more birds move in and the mite population exploded. However they were all gone by the first of July. I didn't do anything different than I had been for months. I really wasn't sure they were gone for good. This week I have checked birds, no mites, and today I cleaned the coop. In the past if I cleaned the coop I ended up covered in the little buggers, they love me it seems. Before I even found mites on chickens I could tell they were around because I would find them on me. But NO mites! :D I didn't do anything different so I guess I'll give the hot summer the credit. I have never had my coop so dry and dusty before.

So sorry Nova about your dear Roger. You have been thru a lot with him. Maybe he will still show up?

Taprock, I know this sounds crazy, but I used the Avon Skin so Soft on my silkie hen that had the mites on her feet/legs, sprayed the underside of the nest box with the permethrin and left it for a few days, then totally changed out and cleaned everything. Haven't seen any more bugs at all. They disappeared almost overnight. Added bonus, really conditioned her legs, not nearly so dry. Marines use this product when they go out in the field on training missions (no, not a Marine issued item) but works very effectively on keeping bugs away and off.

I haven't tried this, but it sure looks good!!

Apple Pie Filling

Per Quart:

5 apples

1 c. sugar
1/4 c. corn starch
1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 c. water
3/4 c. apple juice
2 TBSP lemon juice

Core, peel and slice apples. Place in boiling water for 1 minute. Set aside and keep hot. Boil remaining ingredients until desired thickness. I barely let mine reach a full boil. Fill hot sterilized quart jars alternating apples and syrup until it is almost full. Run a knife down the side to remove air bubbles. Add more apples and syrup. Process 25 minutes.

I've been making this recipe for a couple of years now and I absolutely love it! It makes the best apple crisp!

Apple Crisp

1 qt apple pie filling

1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. flour
1/2 c. oats
1/4 c. butter, melted

Pour the pie filling into a pan. Mix remaining ingredients well and sprinkle over the top of filling. Bake at 375 for 20-30 minutes until golden.

CRUEL! JUST CRUEL! I am on a serious diet! AND THIS IS JUST EVIL!

I wish he would... I tried the food whistle for over 20 minutes and nothing... I am giving up on silkies until I can afford to build them a totally secure pen from arial and ground predators... His crest had come back in so thick and full... So, the babies I have now, they are going to be getting some serious eye balling every day!
