Those apples look fantastic!

Nova, I'm sorry about Roger. I'm hoping he turns up tomorrow for you.

Some great photos of chickens in the last few pages. The Orpington photos make me miss our Penny.

So sorry Nova! Your tales of your chickens are so good that I always feel the loss when you lose one!

Our stir fy didn't turn out so well tonight. Can I give veggies lightly coated in sesame seed oil to the hens? I've googled and I've searched here, but can't find anything. Would you give them to your birds?

HH I been working on those fairy babies for you!!!

I will get them done soon!

Thanks for the link RaZ! And Wingless!

Great job FB on the new coop! I love it!... I need a bigger coop. Want another job? LOL How are them Emu?... I think I need more pics when you get a chance!!!
So glad this hen is going to make it!

I had a family practice doctor recently tell me to not keep putting ointment on my kids wounds as they need to dry up and scab and heal. I know at the hospital we kept burns moist but perhaps the doctor is right about letting things dry and scab up. Just thought I would share that point of view with you as it was new to me.
This is too large of a wound and I think it should be left open to heal from the sides inward, and from the inside out.
Depends on the wound. Surface wounds, yes they should be allowed to dry up and scab over. Deep wounds, need to heal from the inside out. Allowing them to dry and scab over may allow an infection to set in under the scab. I would also use natural sea salt to help washout wounds. It is soothing and helps aid in healing.

This has been my experience at least with the deep puncture wounds my dogs would get with their occasional fighting.. ugh!
Oh. I thought salt would burn! But very good to know!
But the litle chihuahua is starting to hate me cause he's blone and I can roll him over and pick them off his belly, I crush them between the backs of both thumb nails till I hear them pop. I'm getting so sick of fleas!!!!
Okay... so I am not the only one that loves to here the POP when a flea dies between my tweezers? !!! May all fleas die a firey death!
Borax did nothing for the adult fleas but I can say that there are a lot fewer fleas now that I have used it. (maybe it dried up the eggs?)
I, however, have also flea bathed both dogs and been hand picking all the ones I can see of my bichon (cause they are so easy to see on him and they LOVE him more than the other dog) 2 times a day. I don't know what is working the best, but I feel like maybe the frontline can keep up now.

I do not use flea sprays because we had a cat and a dog that had seizures after licking the product. I don't trust them. Just be aware that the flea sprays affect the fleas nervous system and could do the same to pets.
Roger is gone...
OH NO!!!!!

I hate when that happens!
I would! If mine don't like it they just walk all over it until I put it in the compost...

Thanks BYFM. We all ate some of it, but it was pretty mushy. I'm trying to clear out our ancient freezer so we can defrost it this weekend. That bag of frozen veggies was pretty frosty. And I felt awful eating frozen veggies in the middle of harvest season. I hope the chickens like it.

Our 2 have been very noisy this week. They're 20 weeks now, and I read that they get loud when approaching egg laying. Fingers crossed we see an egg soon.

Fleas have been here this summer too. I have no treatment suggestions that haven't already been mentioned.

I've read that this summer has been terrible for mites (because of the heat).

Took our son out fishing today at a state park... I can tell you there is a few good reasons no one brags about the great fishing there...
First you have to walk quite a way to the pond... IF you can find the right path to take on their posted map.
Then after you walk to the pond there are docks you can cast from that are 10ft in the air. (Not completely their fault...water levels are down)
Did I mention the awenings you are sure to catch your lure on?
BF did catch one bass and we felt terrible tossing it back in the water from 10ft in the air.
Also, the park closes at "dusk"! What time is dusk? I dunno, but it is different everyday... so on our jog back to the car we feared being locked in the park because we cut dusk very closely...

I think we will go back to our usual fishing spots...

On the up side, Shawarma is doing very well. I hope her booboo heals as fast as her "queen bee" ego has grown... She prefers warm, wet food now, she has her own coop in the garage, she has a heat lamp, she gets to come inside every day to get tended to...
She deserves to be spoiled!

he he he
That's how it all started with the lap hen i had, i saved her life the first week after i bought her, after that she was MY hen and no one else dared brave her fury to get into my lap except the rooster, and though she was small she ruled the coop during her reign. It was something to see her bossing hens nearly twice her size! I could just about hear her telling them how momma loved her best, she got to go INSIDE...........I'm sure your girl will be the same way

. But NO mites!

I didn't do anything different so I guess I'll give the hot summer the credit. I have never had my coop so dry and dusty before.

( I spray 7's in the coop all corners and cracks after I clean. don't use on my birds, but do spray the coop, let it dry good before they go back in)
I haven't tried this, but it sure looks good!!

Apple Pie Filling
