Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Townline does duccles. I'm looking for someone who might be able to help me find fertile porcelain eggs whenever my silkie choses to go broody. I already have someone with cochins. I think we might put 2 or 3 of each under Gidget when/if she's ready.

I don't see duccles - they have just bantams listed. If you want 10 or more, they will box for you to pick up. Anything less you have to go there and hope they have them available. They hatch on Monday, first pickups on Tuesday 10am. I am like a kid before xmas; I am going to be there Tues to get my first chicks of the year.

My silkie went broody yesterday. Should I put golf balls in with her? No one is laying well enough to give her any eggs. Or do I just let her sit in the nesting box with no eggs.

glambka i would be honored to donate some ee eggs! Martha has a paint palette dedicated to those! Mine are blue, sage overlaid with faint yellow, sage, and i think one on the mint side? If i wasn't on my cell phone i'd paste the link. Google aruacana blue, it might bring it up. The shells should be great quality. I feed high quality feed with omega enhancer added, which has stuff for easily digested calcium.

Oh i wish i didn't have mg here :( I have porcelain.

mattsinger - dont open you incubator . unless its a emergency.. other then that i leave all the chicks in there till end of second day.. usually by then mine all hatched.. and the duds were left.

Silly, I'm glad things went well. I'm a nervous wreck when it comes to dental work.

How wonderful Glambka!!

My house bound chicken is walking normally now, she has also gotten a nice red comb, started squatting and doing an egg song, so maybe she will lay me an egg before I ship her back to the coop. If it is as warm as they say she will go back on Wednesday when I will be home to keep an eye on things.

I did our taxes this week. I was worried because we had a foreclosure finalized and Dh not working for 6 months last year. However, it turned out well as we were considered poor enough to get lots of breaks. Each year when we get tax money back both DH and I pick one small house improvement item or project to do that would be put off otherwise. Dh has already decided on some new siding to do part of the garage. This year I was thinking of painting all my chicken coops. I keep wavering between all the same color or all different colors. Either way I still have lots of time thanks to the weather.

It seems my mouse population has taken a climb in the past week. Yesterday I moved the heated dog dish to find a nest of new born baby mice. Needless to say it was mouse snacks all around. Then last night I am closing up when I hear squeaking. My small sizzle had a mouse in her beak, wrestling it. I had the traps stacked under the nest boxes, unused but in a spot they would stay clean. I dug them out only to find two frozen mouse carcasses already trapped. They are wonderful traps (thanks 1muttsfan) and even doing the job when stored.

@SillyChicken Glad the visit went well.

@RaZ Keep the good info coming. I went to pay taxes at the town hall the other day. I spoke to the zoning person and what a web of illusion is being spun by our elected officials. Even though this township used to be mostly farms the zoning is residential by number code on the tax sheet. However, if you ask them it's res/ag? Then factor in that the "majority" of landowners here own horses, cows, deer, donkeys, chickens, well you get the idea. Yeah, someday the folks that are buying up land and turning it into developments, communties, and 8A housing areas will challenge all of what the shrinking "majority" do. Like a huge part of Michigan, if you drive through here you'd swear it could not happen here. What's worse is the lady in Shelby Twp that has over 40 acres and is told she can't have a chicken? No one is immune it seems.

Someone said grass next week then I saw they were in Ohio. Yeah, well, not here. 5 feet of packed down ice snow is more like it, lol! I've got to ramp up for syrup and dig out my fire area and move some wood. Maples will be flowing soon snow or no!
