Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Well, Myrtle was acting funny last night, so I locked her up in the milk shed and put lots of straw in there. The next morning I checked on her before going to work. I saw blood on her rear end, so I am thinking, "Oh she is in labor!" But, I almost miss seeing the baby under the desk. I hurriedly pulled out the baby from under the desk, it was cold and covered with frost, for it was very cold this morning, about 0 degrees. It was the world's cutest buckling. I searched for more babies, and checked Myrtle's belly- empty. Bummer, but it is a big baby! 7 1/2 lbs! I had to call my boss to tell him that I will be going to work late for I had to milk Myrtle to get the colostrum for the buckling. We are bottle feeding him. The kids named him Oliver for he is all long legs! His ears got frostbitten, so they are swollen, and he will most likely lose them.

I am praying that the ears are still alive.

I hope his ears turn out alright. If you got him warm in time, it might have saved them. He does look massive, oh my goodness! He won't be staying in that tote for too long, with his long legs!

ed up, they're too cold. If they're spread out to the very edges and trying to hid under stuff, they're too hot. When they get bigger I have an adjustable window screen you can get at ACO. Just get the wide one that will fit your tote and expand it to fit. Easy and cheap!

Skirted Dani's and Penny's fleeces today...This is Dani's pre skirting and then all sorted into piles.

Aren't these hives Beautiful? Gives me some ideas of my own!!! (though I wish I thought of it first!!)
beautiful hives and wool,

Just wanted to say Hi. I am new to this forum. We have 6 chickens, 2 Silkies, 3 Isa Browns and I Silver Laced Wyandotte. I love my chickens, except the Silkie rooster he likes to try and flog me ever chance he gets. I live near Grand Rapids, Michigan.

WELCOME TO ALL NEWBIES !!

Beautiful day hope every one got lots done

Welcome to the new folks! It's great to have sun and above freezing temps!!! I'm very happy with my Chanteclers from last spring, and want more. Glad to hear that Cackle's look good, although I'm not ordering from them this year. The kid is really cute! Made it through TSC today without any chicks, as IT'S TOO EARLY, don't want them in the house for eight weeks... Mary

So the kids picked out a light Brahma, EE, Isa Brown and a silver laced wyandotte from FFH in Almont. DH built this for them by the time we got home. The cats didn't seem to care or the Shepard, but our lil terrier was sure curious. She's been watching them since we got home.

Welcome to all the newbies.
Those carved bee boxes are beautiful. And Raz, thanks for the link, it was great. Between Raz, Silly and others you're going to make me get into bees and I hate getting stung. Its 41° here, I love it. Farmer congratulations on the baby boy, he looks huge in the pictures. Your lab almost looks like he's asking to be rescued.
Lady- sorry about the impacted crop, do you know how that happens? I hope she's fine.

It had 2 extra legs and part of another hip and was attached by a tiny lil piece of skin. The parasitic twin was hard and didnt move, just dangled. It appears that eventually with no to hardly any blood flow to it, it should shrivel up and fall off in time or could be cut off and it will heal just fine. But regardless it was neat to see and since it was healthy, we decided to give it away to someone that would like a 4 legged chick.

Silly, thank you! That just may do the trick! It was me trefoil with the impacted crop. The bird eats something that won't pass. If you are lucky it is long grass or straw, feathers. Than it rots and gets soft which is nasty but passes. If it is not organic it won't pass. Either way solid food gets blocked and the bird can starve quickly.
