Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Well I caught my injured (or whatever it is) BLRW pullet last night after everyone went up to roost. Despite only having 1 working leg, she managed to get UP the ramp and into the coop, AND up onto the highest roost bar! She was not too happy with me looking things over OR with me putting her in a small dog crate. *sigh* Hopefully she just sprained something but judging by her lack of ability to move her toes I'm not counting on it.

WHY CAN'T I KEEP WYANDOTTES ALIVE!? She's not even a year old yet!

I know my 2 EE Roos started crowing at around 6-8 wks last year..must be that EE gene;)
My son picked out an EE pullet from the FFH bin, it's almost 10wks old and I'm thinking it looks like a roo. However, I have not heard it attempt to crow, so maybe I'm wrong and it is a hen. What age do they usually start crowing at? I will have to get an updated pic of him/her and see what you guys think.

Everyone have a good day, another double header tonite in Yale, sure hope weather is a lil better than Tues. was.

All winter the turkeys came and went several times each day. Last week 5 toms spent hours stutting in the yard. Now that turkey season is open they have disappeared.

.Just checked the temperature of the incubator and it is holding perfectly. I had collected eggs for 10 days and started them this past Monday. As I was collecting eggs filling the incubator seemed like a great idea. Forty two eggs could result in a glut of chicks. While I don't expect a 100% hatch there still should be a lot more chicks than I need. With 22 of the eggs being Welsummers at least I will be able to cull the cockerels. With the Vorwerks I will have to wait until their combs and wattles become more pronounced.

I've had cockerels that didn't crow for 7 months, so I wouldn't count on that as a way to sex chicks.  ;)

I would certainly agree with you on that one! My other boy (the NHR from TSC's pullet bin) was at least that old before he crowed! I think he was closer to year old before it even sounded like a real crow..then he got real mean & went to camp ...

I feel your pain. I had the same issue with my BCMs last year :/

I also had 100% fertility and hatch rate with the marans/ee mix in both hatches so they're just vigorous all around. Crazy birds. Anyone want an olive egger roo?

I had two young wyandottes die also. One went blind. One just dropped dead one day, the following day, found the blind one had died. Less than a year old.
