Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Have fun at Up North CS today! I was thinking of trying to get over there, but a combination of my oldests first soccer game, a whopping head cold, and having to be to work by 430 took that off the table.

I REALLY want to plant an obscene number of tulips, daffodils, and alliums for next year, but I'm too cheap to pay the current retail for them. Hoping they go on clearance soon. Does anyone have a variety of tulip that seems to naturalize well? A friend has darwin hybrids that do fantastic every year, but I haven't has as much luck.

How do you make ice cream with chicken eggs? My mom used to buy a type of vanilla ice cream with eggs in it when I was young and it was SO GOOD. I'd love to know if you have a recipe!

Most ice creams I make are custard-based so they contain eggs. Here's one of my fav's that I found on the internet. I keep the whites for use in other recipes.

Buttermilk Ice Cream

2 cups heavy cream
1 1/4 cup sugar (divided)
12 large egg yolks*
2 cups buttermilk
2 tsp vanilla
Pinch of salt

In a large, heavy saucepan, combine heavy cream and one cup sugar, bring to simmer over medium heat.

In large bowl, whisk egg yolks and remaining 1/4 cup sugar.

Remove cream mixture from heat and drizzle a small amount into yolks, slowly, whisking constantly to keep the eggs from curdling. Do this until it warms up the yolks before pouring the yolk mixture slowly into the cream, whisking constantly.

Cook over low heat until mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Strain the mixture and whisk in the buttermilk, vanilla and salt. Cool completely (in the fridge overnight is best) and freeze according to manufacturer's directions.

*6-8 yolks work just as well, though the ice cream is not as rich. You could also substitute half and half for some of the cream if desired.

This is the 3rd fall I've been in this house and I still haven't planted any bulbs... I sure miss them in the spring. I've wanted to get some for this fall, but haven't looked at pricing yet... I would need a lot of them. I want crocus, tulips and daffodils. I usually order from Breck's.

Meijer has bags of 100 mixed darwin hybrids, and daffodils (maybe narcissus?) for $20. I'm too cheap for that!

I did get some at Menards (packs of 15) but they were in the wrong bin apparently and were $1/package more than I thought. Oh well!

I would like about 500 bulbs... probably going to have to settle for a lot less then that though. I can always add more next year!

If I just want bulbs to naturalize, I'll buy the cheep ones. I'll even wait until November or December when the big box stores put them on sale to get rid of them. I plant them a good bit deeper than the 3:1 rule.

I've had good luck with this method. But I get tired of drilling holes after the first 100 or so.

I picked up a couple of beautiful mums today from Mums The Word, down in New Boston.
