Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That was the other option I have been considering...She might get company as a small yellow finch just smashed into the glass door next to me. Picked her up, but she's just been standing on the porch for the last 30 mins breathing heavily (& driving the cat nuts).

Trying to console myself in looking at the cycle of life...while Spaz passed this morning, one week ago today several new babies hatched to Maia.
Just tough as these are my first birds, dog, cats...& I haven't had to deal with this before...
Who'd've thunk a bird would upset me so much.....
Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. :( I lost my first chicken a little over a month ago, and yes, I was also surprised how much it impacted me. We don't know when we get them how much a part of our lives they are going to become, do we?

How is the hen duck today?

@HollyDuckFarmer
 and @fuzzybutt love

The hen is doing good.  I had her isolated in a warm spot for 3 nights and on a 3 day round of meds.  The 'hot" abdomen is back to normal and she's acting almost like her old self.  I think today she'll be reintroduced to her flock.

Ah, ok hot abdomen+ no egg= internal laying, different from egg-bound!!! You will have to watch her then. Meds were right for that.

Precious kitty, your girl may have had a problem with her laying mechanisms from the sound of it. By bringing her in, you decreased her body's need to lay- you bought her time on earth. Don't stop the pain but i hope you find a shred of comfort. I bury mine 3 feet down and also save feathers sometimes. If she was part of the flock i show them her body and let them greive (yes, they call out for their missing comrad for weeks if i don't) and then we are all collectivly off our feed for weeks trying to deal with it. I personally believe when we give our pets such easy lives as some of our chickens get that they are allowed to develop in ways their wilder cousins do not- no different than a dog for those special birds. ((((Hugs))))

My Spazzie is dead

She has been indoors since December ....

I don't know what happened. She was acting lethargic yesterday...had her cuddled with me...

Don't think I'll have a necropsy or anything done since she hasn't been with the flock. She never did lay an egg..& was fourteen months old...

I am SOOOOOOO upset....she was my baby (my avatar).
Oh so sorry to hear. It is devasting when you lose your babies....HUGS.

Thanks for the condolences, everyone....

Spaz is buried deep in the ground, deep in the woods, surrounded by purple (my fav color) wild flowers.

Just glad if this was meant to happen, it happened while I was home (off to Dayton tomorrow morn) not while pet sitter is here for the week.

She was very cuddly yesterday....can't say I was overly surprised this happened .... Doesn't make it much easier tho....

Sorry Precious...

When we bury our dogs, we put a solar light on their graves. I have a lot of lights..... :( .... I agree that the act of digging and returning to the earth, is therapeutic in itself. Giving your girl up to nourish the bodies of her brothers and sisters of the woods is also a good way to keep her spirit "alive".
Sam, nice to see you still posting. Have you gotten any fishing in yet? It's nice to know your old friends home will be going to someone he knows will appreciate it, more so than his nephew would.
I hope he is doing well. Perhaps next year you could bring him along to Chicken Stock!
I am still on the wall about attending cs, I have been swamped at home and work. This weekend I had to work so I've not been able to do my weekend chores... it's just been snowballing lately. I cannot commit to anything yet.
I do want to make sure that the new folks who plan to attend, go and have fun. But, please also plan to give a donation, because the cost of renting the pavilion comes from one of the members pocket and we like to have everyone help cover that so someone isn't stuck paying for it. There is no set amount, just give what you can. Thank you.

My birds go out back into the woods to return to the earth, and maybe help another critter along the way.

Spent all day yesterday building this, then installing the bees - I stood next to the hive for quite a while after unpacking them, listening to them fly around. They landed all over me (I had on a jacket and screen hood but only jeans and bare hands otherwise) without a sting until one got pinched between my legs when I took a step. Can't say I blame her. It was interesting to listen to them, each sounded quite different from the others, some high-pitched and agitated, others gently buzzing.
