Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hi! Well, if you live anywhere in the grand rapids/ muskegon area there is a place off of the apple ave/ alpine ave road casnovia area that is making 6x6 "deer blinds" for $400, have hardware cloth in the windows already! You can look it up on c.l. under hunting blind; smaller ones can be made the add says. The physical location is a ma and pa gas station.

The big thing though is making a secure pen! Geese/ ducks can use dog houses but a good covered hardware cloth pen is over $100.

(it is my next chicken purchase) you need half inch by an inch holes, no more no less. It is to do with strength and weasles.
Whats the name of the place Fuzzy?

Idk. I was talking about the cl ad with a friend and he knew of the place and told me where. It is a little gas station not far from the road everyone from here takes to "go north" to mesick and traverse city. The road it is on is alpine ave in the gr area, after it curves to go towards muskegon it becomes apple. Might be something else even along the way! But same road, it is the only business for miiiiles on that strech so easy to find. :) I have not made the visit yet but unless they are total crap it's where i am going. I want a version of his playhouse (same with porch) but built cheaper with the hardware cloth windows and shingle instead of tin; i need to go with cash in hand and my materials i want installed when i go though :p. (Green shingles, bigger sheet of plexi)

Welcome!

I simply am speechless...how can a judge wave around a piece of paper pertaining to YOU & the status of your "probation" and NOT let you read it??? This is beyond ridiculous & harassment. I am sitting here shaking my head...
Welcome Amanda and Breezy. There are a lot of good people here.

You should see this judge in action, it's not just me. After 35 years on the bench he is out of control.
Metal lath... it will rust, badly... unless you paint seal it and maintain it. But... it would certainly work, Just have to be careful as the edges etc are sharp.
If you can get it cheap enough, you can bury it to help prevent digging predators.
And talk to your neighbors, I'm sure you will find a local Handyman/Handywoman who'd likely appreciate the work. Personally I like converted doghouses myself.

Everybody else who is fighting weeds like me, here ya go: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2011/06/got-weeds-use-vinegar-not-roundup/
I should start a travelling coop building business. I have all the necessary tools. It's just that everyone is so spread out across the state.

Just a note about using vinegar for weed control...Use the horticulture type, it is stronger than household vinegar. Good luck, I've had mixed results using it so I don't.

I feel bad that I was not able to make it to Lansing for the additional Senate ag committee hearing today. I feel like I am letting people down. I was there on the 15th and did get to testify, so that is okay.

Our voices are being heard in Lansing despite the spin that MDARD and now MSUE is putting on the whole issue.

To that end, I'm shamelessly promoting the MSFC fund raiser. http://teespring.com/smallfarms

Really on the vinegar? I was so excited , y'all know how I don't care for chemicals. I will pick a really hot dry day.

& yes you should go round building. Yes.
thanks Raz didn't know there was a horticultural vinegar. I have a recipe for the vinegar weed killer it does not kill the weed to the root though so you have to keep spraying every week or two.

just a thought about using cooper sulfate for chickens. many people are allergic to sulfates and that could be an issue, not worth the risk, predator proofing a tractor , you could bend wire out from the bottom about 1 ft.

Quote: Welcome Amanda and Breezy

for the coop kennel consider a stock panel enclosure you can get what you need and TSC or FFH and they may know someone that can build for you, they are reasonable and easy to build, with all your predators you will need hardware cloth over the panels but you can do that with wire or zip ties. maybe 2x4 welded wire on the bottom would work as the grass will grow through. you can put a tarp over one end and protect them from wind and rain some have used them all winter

don't forget to check out chicken stock June 21st. in Lansing. all are welcome Dr. Fulton from MSU will be speaking I think around 10AM?

Daran, sorry about your calf, but the kid is adorable.

CS question,,,, are we doing a raffle like past yrs? always a fun way to put names to people as they go up to pick out a prize
