Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I am 60 years old and had lived in Michigan my whole life - until last year. Fed up with taxes after taxes, lowered property values and poor police and fire coverage we moved to Tenn. It is so nice here, we no longer pay state and city income tax, propety taxes on our home are equal to what we paid on a house in the "hood" and the valu of it had dropped by 2/3. The house next door to our MI home sold at auction for $2,600. Meanwhile our home here was almost half of what an equal property would cost in MI and we have 10.4 acres and a nice 2100 sq foot house. There are no regulations and we can do what we want. I am amazed at how many people who live here are from MI.
Sounds really lovely there!!!

I have always wanted to visit TN, hopefully someday

I am sure other states have their areas and cities that have similiar issues as far as no animals in "town" type of ordinances. I think we hear more now because of the RTFA and more people are interested in knowing where their food comes from. For us the deciding factor will be the weather. We will locate rurally anyway, in the the midst of farm country. But I don't know how many winters like this last one we want to deal with. ( I am becoming a winter wimp). One more factor is we have over 22 acres in Michigan farm country bought and paid for, but the county has designated 11 of them as Residential...The 11 that we farm. The other 11 are woods and very hilly and rocky.
Totally agree. With internet and news all over and your seeing the way your food is produced and the way the animals are treated and all the toxins added to it, no wonder people want to go back to their own eggs, gardens and etc. Even lovely just as pets.

The small farm battle is taking place all over the state. You hear more downstate news because there is more news coverage. Just days after the ruling change, police went to a Marquette home with chickens. Midland farms have been shut down.

With the recent GAAMP change any city can make chickens or other livestock illegal with a simple overnight zoning change.

PS I really liked TN when I worked there.

That's funny.. TN is on our list of places we may consider. As much as I love MI........... I may have to leave it!

Raz, thanks for the PMs yesterday, they helped get me out of a foul mash mood!

See ya all soon

I went to Tennessee in February to pick up my new mini horse trailer and just the few hrs I was there I meet so many nice and friendly folks. I have to say both my hubby and I said that 'if' we ever moved, Tennessee it would be. And that was our opinions in just a few hrs of being there.

I lived in TN for 5 years. I just love it there! People are so friendly an in no hurry. lol Saddest day ever was when my husband was transferred. I miss TN every day. Even when we go back for vacations, the kids were always amazed that the folk were so freindly. Will be going back at the end of the month. Can't wait! Would move back there too, but I can't leave my kids and grandkids behind!!

Idk if it changed a lot, but my dad's side of thefamily was from indiana and illinoise, and we used to drive down there. Nothing but God and corn in the parts we went! I have drove through tenn and my DH lived there for a year as a kid. I thought it was beautiful; up north is plesant and unhurried as well :) I lived in mesick and worked in traverse city for a summer. Never wanted to come back down! They call us southern michiganders down state a....s...ls. on account of the hurry and city attitudes. My company goes under here i'd see about transferring to the one in indiana though.

Coopersville and ravenna are essentially cow towns but even they are not wanting small homesteads! Not even a bunny hutch allowed in ravenna.
