Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Oh also... I got my shipment of ceramic eggs in yesterday. They look SO REAL... gonna have to mark them. I'll be putting a couple in the small coop today & it will hopefully teach my 1 hen that pecking eggs will get you a sore beak! We'll see.

Mareks' vaccination is VERY effective in preventing disease, and very highly recommended. No vaccination prevents infection, they only reduce or prevent clinical illness. Birds die from Mareks, so anything we can do to prevent that is beneficial, whether it prevents infection or not.

Snowflake, I bought a few bottles of vaccine this spring, and the dating was very good, into 2015. If you could combine an order with someone it might be less expensive overall. Instead of small hatches this year I am only doing 2 so that the chicks can all be vaccinated. Really it works out a lot better for me, fewer pens and less fussing with chores. Got a batch of eggs cooking right now - candling this weekend.
That is a good suggestion, perhaps next yr I can find some one to share shipping with, I did not vaccinate my small groups this year hens going broody all the time, so I am hoping for the best but expecting some to die, I got a ## of roos so they will go into the freezer. I was hoping the wafer would be cheaper but evidently the dilutant has to be kept cold, will keep looking for some place close enough to pick up

Good luck. I put golf balls in and the hens get broody on them but the peckers still peck. I was think about putting a trailcam in there and seeing who's the culprit. Can you say naughty girl goes to jail. When I get my new coop made I'm making Opa's design roll-away nest box just because.

Mabel our EE is 21.5 weeks old. I know all birds are on their own timelines, and that EE can sometimes take longer than normal to start laying. I'm standing next to the coop with my hands on my hips, and tapping one toe.

I'm up to a count of 7 eggs from my 6 girls, and I didn't have any in the nest this morning. I think only about 2 of them have started laying, just need to get the rest going.

And this guy lives in an area that is zoned for ag.
I hate to sound like a doom crier but this is happening all over the state. From suburban backyards to homes with acreage.

They were their first, its their piece of dirt. And they filed for the permits to begin with. Its the Townships fault for not granting them.
Olive Egger Bird Dog???

I'm guessing she meant Old English Bull Dog.
