They could have decided that last night and I could have slept for several more hours. But you've got to love your kids. I think it's a law.

Chickenlady2014, I am just south of Lansing. And we got a bunch of snow already.

Wow Rocky64 we are practically neighbors.

I would like to welcome all the new people. I believe you will find this group to be very friendly and extremely well informed about raising chickens....I know I have had nothing but good experiences and good information from these folks.

birdman, nice pics, I don't know anything about peafowl but they look like they are piling in that corner, maybe their longnecks keep them from suffocating like chicks?

on my way out to dig out a path to the run. got house cleaned up some what after yesterday, Grand daughters went home about 6, just sat down and in walks my son with his family to watch the super bowl, glad they all came was a busy fun day

the game was rather exciting no mater who you were cheering for especially towards the end

I think we got about 16 inches with lots of drifting. Last night we finished at about 9:45pm cleaning out the drive way (500') hand shoveled paths to the chicken coops and goat shed, Shoveled out the chicken runs, a path for the goats to get to their water, a path for the sheep to get to theirs.. all the sliding doors...... an area for the piggys and one for the dogs to go outside in...... phew.... and then got up at 4:00 am to do it all again... and oh guess what we get to do when we get home? You got it......... I am just glad this year is not as bad as last year, cause we were sick of all the shoveling!

DH unfortunately was late for his first day on the new job today. They did call and tell him not to worry about even coming in. His other job told him not to worry about getting the building key and computer back... he's thinking maybe he could do a little work for them on the side. Which would be very helpful..

Hope everyone is doing well who got snow. Be careful out there! (well, if you didn't get snow, I hope you're doing well too)!

Happy Ground Hogs Day!!!

Happy Groundhog Day to everyone. Not much snow in the Muskegon/Twin Lake area. Maybe 3-5 inches? Drifted so much hard to tell. CCCCCold though.

Welcome to all the new folks. Stick with us and talk about any critter you have - we all do!

Still wondering about what you all do for a few turkeys? Mine are in the barn wintering over with deep litter. Working well although they like to fly out and roam the barn, lol! The top plate of the temp coop is 6 feet high and they roost there. Anyway, come spring I need to move them. I'm not sure about letting them free-range daily. They are wicked fast, strong, and hard to corral. The last time I let them range it took an hour to get them back in the barn.

Well, the last batch I had, were pretty good. They wouldn't go in at night on their own, but I could generally herd them in the lean too on the shed, because that is when I put their food out at night. So even when they free ranged, our bbw, fatty mcwaddles... yes she was huge.. was the boss and was eager to go in to eat and the rest followed.. So that is how I got them in. The lean too we used for them was just a roof and posts, we covered the open wall in lattes so it was cool in summer, and in winter we rolled down some reinforced plastic. I had some 2x4s for them too roost on. Since I have sent all mine to the freezer we will be building a new enclosure future birds. What I have been trying to do is to get a round wire corn crib with the top, and a solid one too. I just missed craigslist add for both ugh! Anyway I thought those would make nice turkey coop and run...and would allow the high perches turkeys love, yet keep them safe... that's what I want to do.
More than likely we'll do something similar to what Yaklady has for her birds. The floor has open flooring so the poops are easy to clean up.

Got to love your kids, right? Last night Hope checked with her son about the snow storm, condition of the roads, and whether or not he and his wife would be working on Monday. Since they indicated that they were, and since I didn't want Hope driving her two wheel drive Ford Focus through the deep snow I said I would take her.

Set my alarm for 5am but like most times I set an alarm, I woke 30 minutes early. Hope and I both went out and cleared the driveway and then called her son to tell him that we were enroute. Much to my surprise they were still in bed. We hadn't driven more than 5 miles when he called back to say that he was going to work from home and his wife was taking a personal day.

They could have decided that last night and I could have slept for several more hours. But you've got to love your kids. I think it's a law.

You gotta like em up until the age of 18. That's it.

Hell of a finish last night. I was kinda bummed about canceling on the girlfriend on going to her parents place to watch it, but with as nasty as it was out last evening right when I finished plowing for then, our road was pretty nasty looking and the idea of letting that road set with very little traffic out on it to keep the drifts down on it wasn't sounding like it would have been all that nice to drive home in.

Worked called today and they opted to close the office. I was going to call them in the morning to see if I could only come in at 3 instead of my usual 1:30 on mondays, but this works as well. I would have needed to like jump rope or something in the back room to get my body temp up enough that my hands wouldn't be cold. I've been out plowing since about nine. Got the main driveway cleared out pretty wide, got the neighbors done, and took 5 minutes to yank another neighbors truck out that he got stuck while plowing. Got most of the round pen cleared out, just need to touch up around the front of the barn and the garage as well.

I'm kind of debating on getting the truck out and getting some more straw from up the road here. I just used up the last of my straw to cover up most of the snow in the coop this morning.
