Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That's good to know, DH cuts the wood for our stove, so other than labor and chainsaw running costs, the wood is free. He has already had me looking for flat pans on line so I know he's thinking about building something.

Which boards are you on? and do you use the same handle? DH is on MapleTrader.com. He's the one really taking the bit and running with this. I was going to be happy with my one tap and hanging bucket. Now we have 15 taps set though only 3 are flowing as of last night.

eta: DH says it's just something some people who built their own cinder block stove mentioned. I'd love to see a photo of yours if you have one.

NPIP certified yay!! (well soon as the paperwork comes in the mail)
.

wow they are doing things different. I don't remember taking home leftovers being an option.....don't you need to worry about disease they have inoculated them with?
Nobody that's had mine has ever said anything. I think mine tastes just like any I've ever bought. The massive steam cloud above the boil keeps ash and smoke from falling in. Even big commercial people use wood. If you bottle the syrup and don't have a reverse osmosis filter (I sure don't) and you find a smidge of sediment, after the mason jars sit a week, or so, you can pour off the clear amber and re-bath and seal in another mason. Wood is king IMO. I'm on the maple boards and I've heard the same thing but it could just be the way they do it. A little less "detailed"?
I had some of your syrup, no odd or smoke taste that we noticed

hope you bring some to CS

Cool and congrats. Now what exactly are you able to do because of this? I tried reading up on it but all I have found so far is info on talking classes, etc.
The actual certification is to be a Pullorum Tester/NPIP Tester. It means we can test poultry for Pullorum and NPIP certify them, then you mail the VS 9-2 Form to them with $25 and they mail back your NPIP number. Which then makes you able to export Poultry out of michigan legally along with a VS 9-3 Form.

Yup! :) I don't remember people's lipstick tho LOL!

Did they just give them to you or did you buy them?
Not my lipstick lmao...my hoodie has a neon pink lipstick lip print on the front lol It's from the clothing brand i used to work for Xodothronu(unorthodox spelled backwards. i used to be a part owner, their out of atlanta, Ga) They gave them to us, seemed relieved they didnt have to kill them all. On the ride home they were laying eggs all the way got 10 eggs before we got home lmao. So now we have 20 leghorns in the well house until Trexroo gets the coop split in half today. Couldnt really leave them there to be disposed of so i'm sure the well house is a better option for a day....its big we keep our rabbits in there, its really a largish shed more then a well house, just so happens the well is in one corner we have blocked off. We offered to buy them and they said we could just have them so it worked out well.

These chickens were part of a few research tests namely

To see if chickens lay more eggs when with a rooster

To see the effects of vaccination on poultry, they are vaccinated against every poultry disease that there is a vaccine for in the northern hemisphere, The test was giving the maximum dose at the specified times to see if there were any ill effects. They not contagious if anything they will outlive all our other chickens because they are vaccinated for everything. The only thing we have to worry about is that we can not test them for NPIP for a few weeks because of the stuff they injected them with so we had some "positives" which is not pullorum disease just a control substance. So no, the Dr. at MSU said they are fine to put with out other poultry and cant not spread any diseases to them.....otherwise they would not use them for the class most if not all people taking the class have poultry of their own all over the state.

Cool beans. But now I can just hire you to come test my flock if I ever need to, yes?

Yes lol....i believe i am the only Testers in Alcona County. The Alpena County Tester lapsed their certification and Iosco Runs out in April.....unless they went and took the class again or tested enough birds. A new list of testers should be available in a couple of weeks.
