MY thermometer than I use with my hova bator, the red liquid kind has separated and I can't get the fluid to reintegrate! I have to buy a new thermometer and have no idea where to get one around here! Would an instant read cooking thermometer work just to get an idea if I've gotten it within the right range? It starts at 0 and goes to 220. It's reading room temperature right now.

Dang it, Walmart is a 35 mile drive! And I bet all of theirs are for cooking!

Put the thermometer in your freezer for a couple of hours then let it return to room temperature. That sometimes helps with separated fluid.

i have one you can borrow...thermometer/hygrometer if you cant get yours working.

I would highly recommend the Brinsea thermometer, they are very accurate. Most thermometers have a plus-minus range (+/-) of 2 degrees, which means the temperature can vary over a 4 degree spread - too much for incubation. The Brinsea spot-check is accurate to within +/- 0.2 degrees - 10 times more accurate.

Mine is +/- 0.5 so no not as good but it only cost me $7 with shipping and ive never had a problem with it not being accurate.

Thanks, had a minor brain storm and remembered my old round Sears-Roebuck incubator has a mercury thermometer in a stand, It's from back when they thought 103 degrees F was chick hatching temperature. I removed it from the stand and stuck it on the egg turner. It's reading 100 degrees while the instant read cooking thermometer that I stuck into one of the holes (after I pulled the red plug out) is reading 102. So I think I'm okay.

1muttsfan, I don't think I could get a Brinsea by Saturday but I'll keep it in mind.

Raz, thanks for the tip about freezing the thermometer but it didn't work.

Saw an interesting idea on another forum where people raise geckos. Some of them put a partially full zip lock bag of water inside or a hot/cold gel pack to act as a heat sink and keep the temperature more stabilized. Has anyone here tried that? I thought it was rather interesting. I suppose it would have to go in the tray under the wire bottom to keep from interfering with the egg tuner. Have to be pretty thin though and not mess up putting water in the tray for humidity.
