Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Not just chickens benefit from disease testing. Those of us who keep goats should do it too. CAE, CL, and Johne's disease are pretty nasty (Johne's especially) so making sure your herd is free of them is a great thing!

My six goats are all negative, what a great feeling!

Very true, we are herd testing for CL, CAE, Johne's and brucellosis this year. As well as the nubians have to be tested for G6S.

so how many people know about the police dog that went crazy and attacked a 10 year old...im going to find the link and post it as well...im a pit owner and this is crazy...i cant believe they can even do such a thing.....thought we had right to privacy and rights...but guess not
How awful. This cannot pass. I have had more severe issues with tiny dogs. (They hate me.) Sheesh. It's not the breed, it's the way it's raised and treated. When will folks learn this?

You have to have a certified Tester come out and wing prick your birds to test them for you, you will know if they are negitive on the spot...for Flock testing it is 10% of the flock or 300 birds whichever is greater. Testers generally charge a fee per bird because the antigen is very exspensive. After your birds are tested if all of them test neigitive they will give you a form to sign and send in to the Ag office with $25 to get your NPIP number. The rules are only buy from NPIP flocks or Pullorum negitive flocks....unless after testing new poultry you qurantine any new birds for 30 days, after 30 days if they still look healthy you then put in one or two of your poultry with the qurantine birds and watch them for 30 days if they are all healthy at the end of that you can intergrate all poultry back into your flock...so it is a lengthy process to buy non-NPIP. Poultry also can not be tested before 4 months of age...well they can but your throwing your money away because the test will not be valid.

How much does it normally cost to have it done. I want to get mine done ASAP

Each tester sets their own price..some are a flat rate of $10 per bird..some have a tiered rate as in more birds the price goes down per bird..some require milage some do not. You would have to contact a tester close to you or that you want to come test for you and they will tell you their prices. i can tell you the antigen cost $150+ so most testers only charge to cover that cost, their other supplies and their time...some will give their time for free.

Is there a tester list for Michigan?

Thanks :).
