Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Last summer I had to put down my JRT after having her for 17 years. I still find myself missing her. I believe it was Will Rogers who said that if dogs don't go to heaven, then he wanted to go where they go.

Hi everybody. I've been lurking and learning here for awhile but I thought it was time to say hi

. I've got a mixed backyard flock of 2 araucana, 1 easter egger, 1 Amber white, 1 barred rock, 2 buff Orpington and a Wyandotte rooster. I'm getting some meat birds this summer. I think the roo will be going for a ride with those meat birds this summer. His new nickname is stew

. Anyway I just thought I would introduce myself. Oh and I'm sure you guessed but I'm a Yooper from near escanaba.

Welcome aboard! There are a few of us from the UP! I am near Escanaba, too. Rainbow Packing processes white meat chickens (cornish rocks) if you want to have someone else do the processing (though it isn't too hard to do yourself). Rainbow used to do other kinds of chickens, but found it difficult with all the different ages/feather types/etc. Though maybe if you bring a load of white birds in a sneak in another rooster, you'd get him done, too.

Decided to share some photos I took today of my RIRs.

Here's 2 of them

Looking off in the yard. That tree is where I'm planning to build the coop/run very soon.

Someday, all of this will be yours...

This is my red that I'm thinkin' is probably going to go full rooster

The Red Crew, lookin' for trouble

Oh Noes, they learned to selfie

As far as the trees go, I'll try and get some better pics of that tomorrow. I just ended up being too busy today.

Good morning all! I get to drive across state (From Muskegon to Detroit) this morning for a semi annual neuropsych eval for my ASD child. It's a "school needs to quit this BS fighting with us because he is so high functioning" type of thing as well as a "so high functioning there is no help, but he needs some help" type of thing. So this gives us some direction besides what we get by networking with other parents.

I have chicks in my heated garage! Our first batch of meat birds ever! Any tips on raising meat birds? They are cornish cross. I was thinking of doing a second batch if this one turns out well. Fill a freezer up with chicken. The school is using my incubator to hatch us some egg layers after Spring break and some quail. This shall be an interesting year.

I just got to meet @eatwhatyougrow in person. Great guy! It's always fun to meet fellow chicken people in person!

Hey thanks it was good to meet you to! I agree it is always ice to meet the fellow "chicken in the head" people. when I saw this I thought of that old m&m commercial, where the m&m's see santa and they are like, He does exist and Santa is like they do exist and they all faint....anyway thanks for the birds!

I have raised them about 4 years now, i have done the fermented feed thing with them, I have done the in chicken tractor thing, I have kept some till they lay eggs and used a roo for breeding, I have processed my own, and had amish do them. I usually feed them unlimited for the first 2-3 weeks and then go to 12 on 12 off they are usually ready starting about 6 weeks-8 weeks some strains of cornish cross will grow faster than others. how many are you doing? will you process your self? have you done that before? If I have 20+ I take them to an amish near me, I drop them in the morning pick up in the afternoon. and 6-8 weeks goes quick...so be ready feel free to pm if you have any specific questions....

Right! It was one of those moments. I've met a few people from here before and it's always one of those experiences. I've met a few people in parking lots of Meijer, Target, and other stores with live chickens. People always walk by with strange looks on their faces. Ha ha! We are "chicken in the head". I think that's a great way to describe us!
