Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I don't know why Craigslist is supposed to be so great. I've listed my car twice and got a scammer.

I've got my Muscovy ducks listed, I SAY they are black and white yet I have people asking if I have blue or brown ones.

I have a Blue Andalusian roo I got an email for saying he wants him. I call this morning and his wife says they don't want him they want the Isa Brown rooster way in the back of the photo. I didn't even know there was an ISA in the photo. We ate those roosters.

*sigh*

I do not want to eat Mr and Mrs Duck. Any one a nice pair for FREE?

I think the friendliness of the bird depends on breed but also if it has been bred with good personality in mind. My Ideal hatchery chickens seem a lot more stand offish and fight more among each other than the couple I have gotten from private breeder that are more likely to keep the friendly ones to hatch chicks from. I just candled my 13 mottled bantam cochin eggs, and only 6 are developing on day #6 so I am a little bummed about that. I will definitely be keeping all the chicks I do manage to hatch.

just put the dogs out and spooked a deer from the edge of the woods. at 1030 in the morning???? WOW! Hope DH gets one sunday morning!

My GLW got out of the run again this morning. Looks like we need to get the rest of the netting up tomorrow! I'm glad I made the dogs go straight into the house from the kennel after I took my oldest to school this morning! Had I not put them directly inside, I'd probably have another dead bird!

I'm going to pick up a few chicks (hopefully) this afternoon via craigslist. They are 2-3 days old. They are broody-hatched, and likely outside or in a coop. Do I still need to quarantine them from my other incubator-hatched chicks? How do I need to set this up?

Looks like it's going to be a BEAUTIFUL day out!

If those were shipped eggs, that sounds about right. Are you incubating in the egg carton? Sometimes that helps to right the air cell.

eta i found this thread, this gal is a crazy note taker! She did a good job of documenting what to do with shipped eggs

this thread is for the little giant incubation specifically, there are threads for different kinds of incubators to troubleshoot the kinds of glitches each one has

Oh, and my sister is very well. She is back to work now. Still has some stamina issues and her lung is healing. Slowly, but surely. The lung was damaged from the bile that was dumping from the liver. They say that can take over a year to fully recover. She won't be running any marathons soon, but she's doing very well. She had 1800 pages of medical documents that she had to procure for her laywer for her lawsuit. She ended up telling the hospital it was needed for a tubal reversal proceedure, and because of the extent of the damages and surgerys she had for the gall bladder, the Dr. doing the reversal wanted to go over it all. Otherwise, the hospital was going to charge $1.50 a page! Yeah. Who has that kind of money to drop just to get your medical records!

Nova, I am glad you sister is well! That was a super scary situation.

Also, I have heard that you, Nova greeted me on BYC and I missed it. I am sorry when I do not reply to a greeting. That does not mean that I am a snobby or mean person or that I like some people better than others. I've only met a couple people from BYC and they were very nice but I consider everyone here a potential friend. I skim this thread and other threads on BYC and I try to be friendly to everyone but I honestly missed that greeting to me. I also try not to make too many comments unless I have something helpful to say because the threads can get really long.
I am not a super perfect nice person or a mean person. I am just a person like everyone else who comes here and does the best they can to share information and the joys and struggles of chicken raising!

Also, to the newbies - If you post a problem and the thread keeps moving along and your question is not answered, ask it again. Because either people don't know the answer and we are waiting for someone who does know to comment or the question got lost in a fast moving thread and needs to be posted again but please don't think that people don't care. This is a very caring group.

She's a spitter. I tried sneaking a few drops on a cracker to her, but she spit the crackers out! lol. The first night i penned her and the d'uccles in the rabbit cage with their own food and water, so she would feel safer and drink more :)
Good luck with her Fuzzy!
Did you ever just put a small syringe toward the back of the chicken's tongue and put the drops down the throat? That is how I do it to get an accurate amount in them.

ok,,,,, I feel stupid now.

Just found this...

I know Monroe pretty well.... DH's mom lives down there so we are in your area on occasion.

Friendliness is just going to depend on the chicken....I have some I've tried to handle since young, and they want NOTHING to do with me.. well.. most of my birds are that way anyway Like most animals, they are food motivated. They'll all come running like your bestest buds if they know you have treats!
If you do get a rooster, I've also had little issues with my faverolle roos (other than they will peck me if I pick them up) and they will come running if I pick up a hen, but they never out right attack me. (they really are just doing their jobs)... Be prepared to re home or send him to freezer camp if he is too aggressive for your family. Most of the time I just leave my birds alone other than when they need care etc.

They are fun to have, but they are work. What kind of coop are you planning on? If you have the right coop set up, it will make all the difference in the amount of work they can be.

Ah well, I figured you were just ignoring me since I had on several occassions in the last weeks said hello/asked you question directly on both this thread and the other, and you never responded. Good to know you just missed it. Maybe I will put it in neon colors next time.

Thanks for those links. I think the first one will be helpful once I have a kid-free moment to read it through in earnest. I have them in one of the metal egg turners with the little detachable rubber pieces that hold the eggs straight up. I am planning on hatching them in an egg carton though since I read somewhere that eggs that are incubator in a turner straight up like mine do better for hatching when they are more propped up rather than lying on their sides like I usually have them. The last time incubating shipped eggs I had 22 silkie eggs, only two of them were duds at this point but I think I just got lucky that time.

I think i drowned the very first chick i ever tried to save by trying to put water in! They squiggle, and one way is the tummy and one way is the lungs..........It was years ago when i got my first flock, and there was one from the feed store i tried to save, of course. Isn't there always? It didn't end well though, and i just am not confident enough to try that again. Nowadays i either sneak meds into the food, or dip the beak in a cap full of whatever. Less chance of mistake!!!
