one more question, how do I edit my signature? I did it once and I can't remember where to get back to it, it's different than other forums. Thanks

I was told that this happened after you open the incubator, it dries out the membrane. :( I had one pipp internal, but died in there unable to pip externally and breathe. :(
This particular chick had been pipped for almost 20hrs and had made no progress, so BIL helped it zip and then the membrane got dry/tough. So it was sort-of shrink-wrapped.

Looks like it will have to be culled as it still can't/won't stand up 36hrs later.

I'm having a HORRIBLE streak of almost all of the eggs/chicks that go into lockdown pipping internally and then not making it any further. I'm giving incubating a break until spring, and then I'll probably try using our own eggs to figure things out instead of trying to use shipped ones.

up at the top there is the row of 'buttons' (forum, coops, breeds, etc) and you want to click on "MY PROFILE" and then scroll waaaaay down until you find the signagture part and click "edit" and then save it when you're done.

I didn't have any luck with my incubator either, but I made it myself so probably have more kinks to work out than a store bought model. Too expensive to keep trying with shipped eggs or keep finding local eggs to try. So, now that my girls are starting to lay, I will try again with my own eggs after a month or so. Just a couple of eggs at a time though. Gotta figure when they hatch I will need to incubate them and keep them warm for quite a while, or be able to sell them as day old to local only.

I have so much I wanted to do out there today, but it is so wet. The forecast said there was supposed to be a break in the weather for a few hours, but we are past that point now and I think past that hope. Either I will have to get good and wet, or wait until a better day when I'm not working.

I agree with the others that said he will only get worse, you can work with him and he may leave YOU alone but will never be able to trust with others..... if DH wants to keep him you may have to keep him confined and if he stays out all night

Don't put out poison. You don't know what will eat it, poison is a mean way to dispose of an animal. Trap it, shoot it.

I spent the dry spell hurrying up to clean the big coop and clean the waterers. Skatter took her babies out of the coop today. Going to have to put the nest box on the ground in the event the littles can't get back up yet. Now, I really want a nap...

Well, I did drive up to Fowl Fest. It was interesting to see a poultry show. I didn't know that there were bantam ducks.
And some of the Tolouse geese were huge! I wonder what they weigh. But my favourites were the blue Orpingtons. If they are as friendly as my buff, that is what I would like to get next.

I did not bring anything home with me despite looking for a bantam hen/pullet for my lone BLA.

Got up this morning and read Farmboy's post. I started to respond until I realize it was still the middl of the night. Went back to bed and slept in til 4am. I held off on making coffee until Hope got up at 7. Granny didn't wake til almost 10. Don't know how them ladies can stay in bed so long.

Found another perfect use for bantam eggs. I had made Granny a toasted English muffin with egg and cheese for breakfast. I scrambled a small egg and pour it into an egg ring in the skillet. It was more egg than needed so I had some runover. After fixing her's I decided to make myself on using a bantam egg. It filled the egg ring perfectly and fit quite nicely on the English muffin.

Editing the signature line is quite easy. Go to My Profile, scroll to the bottom, click on edit signature button.

Thanks, about the signature, I knew it was something simple but couldn't remember it was down so far :) notice my updated siggy.

Just popping in for a quick second to ask a question: I just went outside, and to my surprise my rooster was on my front porch! He doesn't want to go into his coop, apparently. I'm worried that it is too cold for him to be out like this, however, he is very aggressive, and there is no way I'm going to be able to get him into the coop without being attacked. He's actually becoming a problem, because he chased the meter reader lady out of our yard the other day because she got too close to the hens. Anyway, this is the first time he has ever refused to go into the coop? Has anyone else experienced this before and if so, what did you do?

I want to get rid of mine, either eating it myself or giving it away to be eaten, but my husband swears the rooster will get better. I know this not to be true, but he just won't listen. I did tell him that if it gets much worse, I will be going over his head and getting rid of the mean little thing.

But as for the refusing to go into the coop tonight, is he in danger of freezing to death?

Mean roosters do not get better........ why would he? He'll just get more aggressive as he matures. He would not be tolerated in my coops, but he would fit very well in my crock pot! Unfortunately, no he won't freeze to death!

Ah yes, we cross our NZ's with our Flemish Giants too, we get some nice colors that way.

Well we found what took our hen, as my DH found a HUGE raccoon on our front porch raiding our cat food, So now to decide what to do about it, poison, a 22? a cage? I'm not sure but he made me plenty mad that he slaughtered my hen like he did.

Anyways, we spent yesterday building a dining room table, my DH took the day off of work and today we sand and stain, great day to do inside chores, it is so cold already and the rain makes it feel even colder.

I would like to bake, but I don't even have enough eggs to bake with. I am consistently getting 2 brown eggs a day from my 4 hens that are IB and RIR, but my 2 EE and a SLW are giving me nothing at all, haven't laid an egg in a week, I know because we have them separated, it's a little disheartening to feed and care for 7 hens and only get 2 eggs/day.

Question

My 45 chicks are looking really good though, I was thinking of putting them in the big girls coop today, I have it blocked off so they can't be picked on by the big girls, but I am still nervous that it will be too cold for them, They are almost 6 weeks old, it's not like they are coddled now, they are in the garage with down to one heat lamp raised up pretty far, so they can sit under heat, but it isn't too hot, and when I go out to them they aren't all huddled under the heat lamp, would this be a good time to move them? at night I am guessing, or does it matter since they are going into there own space away from the big girls.

Are they feathered out all the way? If they are, they should be fine without a heat source, just give them ample bedding to snuggle down in.
