I hope you know what breeds you have! In my inexperience, I saw someone online using Tidy Cats litter boxes (the pails) cut out for nesting. So that's what we did. But their ladies must be bantams, and ours are large, because our girls fit pretty snug in their boxes. I'm contemplating building them some wider wooden boxes, or just being lazy and getting the premades from TSC. And I think 3 for 7 will be just fine. But apparently I make inexperienced decisions.

3 EEs, 3 Black Autralorp and 1 RIR makes up my motly crew; not including my RIR rooster. I was checking him out today and he is a great looking bird. Lots of pretty red hackle feathers, very shiny/sparkly in the sun, with lots of pretty green mixed in as well. Personally, I think he's a winnning show bird :p, lol.

I used sterilite (??) containers for nesting boxes and cut a big hole in the short side for the chickens and a shallow one for the ducks.

My coop has 3 boxes that they seem to be using. I got 3 eggs today :)

They sure are laying late in the day though! The earliest egg came at around 1230pm. The other two came after I came home from work after 8pm!

Hurry up and get on an earlier schedule ladies!

I finally have a small pile of 6 eggs in the kitchen. They all weigh in around 40 grams.

Nothing more eggciting :) so far we have gotten 2 1/2 dozen chicken eggs & 2 dozen duck eggs over the past almost 4 weeks. I haven't weighed them though.

I'm super impatient and want duck eggs like crazy. I only have 2 girls and one has the gimp legs (pekin.) I have 4 boys and will probably be slimming things down in a couple weeks. Anyone want a Khaki Campbell Drake?

Anyway, the ducks can't start laying soon enough (8 weeks yesterday). We got duck eggs from the farmers market and the Mrs. used up all but 1 baking for work people yesterday! The baked goods came out suuuper good with those tasty eggs :)

It never crossed my mind to bake with them. We are having a Christmas in July party so will have to bake something with them in the AM before it gets to hot. Or try to make egg nog lol

Oh man, baking with them is where it's at! They make cakes super rich and tasty. The Mrs. made a Kentucky Butter Cake with them and it is goooo-oooood

Back home from da Yooperland. Had quite an adventure up at Tahquamenon Falls. We started at the lower falls and opted to hike up the trail to the upper falls instead of driving up to the falls. Its only 4 miles the sign said. The sign also said that the trail conditions were primitive. Meaning you should really have on some hiking boots and perhaps a trekking pole along with plenty of water. I'm going to be hearing about that for a while.

OhMan...I did that hike with my kids when they were about 8-10. It was scary, it was very hot out and I was totally unprepared.
Had to beg a ride back with a stranger, picked a young couple to ask, they were on their honeymoon in Paradise and were very kind.
Whenever I hear 'Tahquamenon Falls', I cringe.

We did at least have 4 bottles of water, sunblock, bug spray and some assorted snacks with us, so we at least had that with us, and we at least saw that there was a shuttle service back and forth to both falls when we started. But we both probably could have used another bottle of water or 2, and better footwear as well. I had on an old pair of work boots that were pretty good for trail conditions, but I found myself wishing that I had put on a better pair of socks that morning. Thankfully neither one of us got blisters on our feet. Amy was pretty much spent by the time she got to the trail head, and I was really glad that there was a brewery at the upper falls as well.

And in other news, one of my year old hens has a prolapsed vent. just saw that this morning....
