Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Opa- Sorry to hear about your friend and your birds. Really push him on the rehab, it makes all the difference. Good luck.

I have a yearling gander American goose (I think) that has gotten kicked out of the flock. Would anyone trade me a this (coming) years' female American or tolouse baby for him?

Me wanting the best possible care for him and his insistent belief that rehab facilities and nursing homes are the same.

I can tell you that my 90 year old ex mother in law also had a nasty fall and needed hip surgery for a fracture. She stayed in a rehab facility that was like a 5 star hotel! She was very impressed and it helped her recuperate quickly. If there are some newer facilities in your friends area, he will be pleasantly surprised at how nice they are. They will make him work and yes, rehab is so important to being mobile again. I just had my right hip totally replaced and found out quickly how much keeping up the exercises helps get me back to walking normally.

Nice reminder to keep vigilant. I noticed during the day several hawks hanging around the woods behind our home eyeing our birds enjoying some free range time...the birds were wary too. Still very uneasy but the woods helps them with protection and we have many brush piles for the birds to run over to. So far so good.

Hope your friend heals quickly, Sam. The rehab centers today are pretty awesome. Visited Kathy Pearl (Mrs Chicken Dad) in rehab, and it was so nice. She had no complaints. They had a lot of activities to keep patients involved and happy. A nice library.

I hope your friend gets into a good rehab Sam...the ones my mom were in were pretty bad.
No doubt the more movement, within reason, the faster the recuperation.

While it has been almost 25 years since I retired from the fire department, I've retained enough of my paramedic training to determine that he had broken his hip.

So sorry to hear this. No doubt the fact that he has stayed so active will be a tremendous help in his recovery. My mom was also very resistant to rehab, until we explained to her that if she wanted to live in her home again she was going to need a lot of improvement post surgically.

The rooster is now named Hawkeye as per Logan. He thinks Marvel, I think Mash.

And I think Last of the Mohicans (and Daniel Day-Lewis) :)

And Happy New Year

When they're not trying to escape lol. They got their intro to some fermented feed and cleaned the dish. I'd say they liked it. I'm going to start handling them more. The rooster is now named Hawkeye as per Logan. He thinks Marvel, I think Mash.

love the name, he never had one before

remember reading another good thing to do to insure safe introductions of new birds. after a quarantine, put one of your older birds in with the new, if all survive another 3 or 4 weeks with out getting sick you know your good to go
On Monday,,as I was set to head to the farm and take my old friend to a dental appointment, he called to tell me that he would be able to go. He had twisted his leg and walking was difficult. I immediately left and soon was examining him to determine the extent of his injury. While it has been almost 25 years since I retired from the fire department, I've retained enough of my paramedic training to determine that he had broken his hip.
What this incident points out is that we can never let down our guard against predators. Given the slightest opportunity they can strike. The gate was closed and several conibear traps have been set, but that won't bring back the lost birds. Remember "Always vigilant".
So sorry to hear about your friend Opa, sad to say at his age it often becomes the same thing, however, determination and a positive attitude on his side can make the difference . Prays for a complete healing for him.
sorry about your birds it reminds me of how lucky I have been on the numerous times I have forgotten to close one of the coops

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL WISHING YOU GOOD HEALTH AND MANY TO LOVE THROUGH OUT THE NEW YEAR
