made a trip today to the feed store to meet someone who purchased some of our birds, & got a ffew bags of feed & bedding while i was there.
they had at least 10 bins of chicks - i did NOT bring any home with me.

Way to be to strong!!

Chicken math!

I started 6 years ago by ordering 25 Polish, before I had a coop. Ship date arrived and I found out I had mistakenly ordered 50, darn internet shopping carts. I now have 7 coop, including one heard for Seremas and a new huge one that has to be made secure before use.

Also they say chickens are the gate way animal to addiction. I now also have ducks, turkey, quail, Guinea fowl and parrots. The only birds I have not liked were pheasants. They were just way to flighty and never tamed at all. My husband tolerates it well, mostly because he has his own hobbies. If he starts complaining he knows he will get it right back about his metal/mill/rat rod. I find its a good trade off!

I still haven't caved in to hatching, but we do have my sons 4-h turkey poults now so they help. Right now I have chickens in more places than I like. Last year one batch of chicks never integrated into the flock so they spent winter in a summer grow out coop that wasn't draft proof. I would move them to the big coop and they would move back. That is where chicks usually are put and so I have no space for them.

In short, ONE COOP and **5** chicks turned into 7 coops and a lot more than 5 chicks. Chicken math.

1muttsfan, that is why I don't have an incubator, broody hens are bad enough, try to brake them but they usually win

you have NO idea how strong he was to not buy some. If we already didn't have 50 birds that just hatched with 38 more in the incubator along with 11 duck eggs, well.....who knows what he would have bought???

it was not overly tempting to purchase chicks at the rural king - they had plenty of the usual breeds (BSLs, australorps, various reds chickens, brahmas, etc.....) , but were a few cuties in the EE bin - there was no way that i would get 6 for the minimum purchase amt.
