Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Straw and/or hay can get nasty if too thick and it's gets wet....ramial wood chips work way better at 'eating' up the ammonia/nitrogen.
I do use straw in the run, especially on ice/snow, and also mud/muck..... but only a very thin layer at a time.
Of course you need to address any drainage issues too, standing water is hard to deal with.
We don't use anything in the runs other than dirt and till them up in dry spring and again in late fall. Only shavings inside the coop on the poop boards to absorb and the floor area. Straw in the nest boxes only so far. And we love to toss in a bit of PDZ during the winter time and hot times in the summer.

That's what we do. Tilling the runs works great. I buy the huge bag of stall dry (pdz) at FF&H and use it for chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats, pigs - you get the picture. Also, FF&H has started their own line of shavings at a lower price than I was paying before. But, the large flake is still smaller and has more dust than the stuff they used to sell.

A pair of calls, a small doghouse with a door, and a small kiddie pool. Let them range all day, lock them in at night, and you'll be loving ducks in no time
There are ducks that are more suited to land, such as the Ancona's we started with. They have a kiddie pool and love that, but also love to forage. They are not small, but still will go into their house at night. We love ducks and it would be better if we had a pond because ducks are pretty messy if confined.

Someone was following me around while I was doing my chicken chores the other evening. He staying within about 30ft for about 5 minutes.

I have a lot of ducks (for the eggs). I have a 400 gallon pond but I have to empty and clean weekly. I let mine range all day. The only messy thing is the house and pond but they are ducks! Us lucky humans get to keep them all clean and such - the term "Lucky Duck" applies here.
