Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Anyone have a brahma cockerel they would like to sell or trade in southwest Michigan? I have two extra silkie cockerels (blue and splash) and a RIR mix who are going to the freezer if not traded.

Thanks for the welcome, all!

@aart, glad you're a Michigander. I've been reading along for a month or so on the Coop threads and always find your comments especially useful. We thought we had enough venting in our chicken coop but realized after reading some of your comments that we need to add more.

Hello all,
It was recommended to me on the new members page to join in my state thread, so here I am!

We are new to raising poultry - well, my parents raised chickens and ducks when I was young but it's been awhile - and my husband and I got 9 pullets, 4 turkeys, 2 Pilgrim geese, and a baker's dozen of ducks this past spring.

We live outside the Ann Arbor area on 10 acres.
welcome!!

Welcome to you new folks.

I was gone for a week so hubby had chores for me. I came home to four chickens gone (hawk) and three Guineas missing (broody I hope). Including my sons back up showbird for the fair. The duck is broody and in a spot that she is now surrounded by concrete blocks and wire, hopefully enough to keep the skunk away that got my first duck. I also have a broody Serema and Cochin that I'm letting sit in hopes to have a mom and babies for our fair. My Poults are doing good (they showed up just before I left). I have one who peeps continually and tries to escape the pen.

Our county fair this year is having open class any age showmanship for poultry. I'm considering trying it. My DH says why if no one else competes you know you will win? I'm thinking it sounds like a fun challenge.

I've been loving the weather, and so has my garden. I know there are complaints it's too hot but I'm ok with it. It's a good reason to go get some ice cream and sit around. We haven't had a hot summer up here in a couple years.

Yup, had a bit of it here a couple hours ago. Fortunately, the breeze remains and the sun remains hidden.

Btw, hello fellow Michiganders. I'm new to the thread and BYC. Northern lower peninsula, specifically traverse city.

Got a lot of stuff done today. cleaned out the closet in the mud room and got a layer of dirt out of that. and sorted out some old coats and snowmobile suites to drop them off to Goodwill. With Mom's hip replacement on Wednesday, she's been on a cleaning tear here and we've been getting things ready for that. Got the new nest boxes all set up in the new coop and even had one of the girls use one of them today. And my brother and I cut down an old dead ash tree that was out in our pothole without dropping it on our heads. Always a plus there. Cut some of those branches off and got them into the coop for the roosts in there.

Kinda debating about putting something in under the sawdust in the nest box. somebody was kicking out/tossing out the sawdust while she was in there.

One of Candy and Brett's Iowa's working in the new nest box. Thinking with Mom's surgery on Wednesday, I'm just going to use that day to lock them into that tractor as nobody is really going to be home all day with that.

I look for those spongy place mats on clearance and use those for extra padding.

like your box, and your pretty hen, I use cut to fit feed bags, easy clean up if an egg breaks
