The reason for the restrictions on antibiotic sales is the over- and misuse of antibiotics. When folks give antibiotics at too low a dose, or not by a proper schedule (meaning just once daily instead of twice, or just one or two doses instead of a complete course of treatment), it leads to antibiotic resistance. And bacteria that develop resistance can pass that on to other bacteria, even different types of bacteria. This is one of the causes of MRSA and other antibiotic resistant bacteria. And if you do not think that is a problem, just remember what Opa went through after his surgery. Resistant bacteria on your farm puts you and your family at risk of serious infections. So, just as there are driving laws to try to protect people from other drivers, there are rules about what medications can by used on farm animals.

Birdman, could you take a few birds to the vet for an examination and get meds for the flock? Not sure, but it may be that Vets can not prescribe for a farm unless they have personally inspected the premises.

I would not argue at all about large farm use of antibiotics, but that is a separate issue, and can only be affected by legislation and government, and in the current climate good luck with that.

This just came to my in-box this morning. It's geared towards 4-H but it is helpful in sorting out what some of the new laws are about.

There are many links within the article so you can do your own research if you are so inclined. I encourage you to learn as much as you can about this and other issues that affect your chicken keeping (other animals too). Over the past few years we have seen too many people blindsided by policy changes, ordinances and bureaucratic shenanigans by the state.

If I get time, I'll go through the article and links and try to give an overview. But not today. I have to go back to the hospital and find out if and how bad I was infected by the unclean equipment used during my heart surgery last summer. Another case of anti-biotic resistance or something else?

HELP! We had two Pekings, one of which has bad legs due to an untreated niacin deficiency as a duckling. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Tim, (Tiny Tim) our special boy has lost his buddy. We are looking for another duck to keep him company. He gets around okay with his legs and is able to get into his pools and beds fine. Although we are open to others, we are hoping to find another duck with special demands. Tim has been with other ducks since hatched and has grown very lonely since the loss of his brother. Because of his legs he has his own 20' x 10' totally enclosed, predator safe pen with a few pools, a duck house large enough for a person to stand inside of, and is allowed to free-range during the day. He even gets to come inside for therapeutic swims to strengthen his legs during the winter. We are leaning more towards finding another impaired duck so Tim is able to keep up with it. PLEASE reply if you know of any rescue groups or individuals with a duck they are willing to part with. It does not have to be a baby, we love them all the same. Tim loves all other animals so we aren't worried about him bonding with a new buddy.

Hi Emilykoc,

I'm supposedly a little over an hour from you and I have an extra khaki campbell drake on the cull list because he and his brother combined would be too much for the girls this spring and two black and white muscovy females I've been thinking of selling when the weather warms up. If you can't find anything closer feel free to drop me a PM. It would be awesome if you could find your pekin guy a pekin female, or even just a mallard based breed female to hang out with. It's so endearing to see them in pairs. Have you checked your local Craigslist yet? You might be able to save a girl pekin bound for the dinner table.
