Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have about 200 mostly year old layers, red sex links and olive/green/blue layers. I change them out yearly as I sell eggs as a business. If anyone is interested I have both stewing hens and laying hens available. They are not in show condition (they are working girls) but the layers are healthy and moderately productive. The stew hens are stew hens.

Thanks! Looks like I may have to add a WCBlack Polish to my order yet. Do you trim their crests back at all? Do you ever free-range them?
I hate to crest trim, only do it when necessary. I don't do much free range. They get to go out in the yard when I clean the coop, that's about it. And as others note, they CAN get their crests picked, but that can happen even in a pen of all polish. My WCBlack hens are queen of the flock. They were the FIRST chickens I put in the pen, so they started at the top.

Has anyone ever ordered from cackle hatchery? How were the birds when they arrived?

I did-biggest mistake of my life!!!

Sick sick birds (even according to my vet who is VP of the ABA!) I ordered around 30-they send 44-one DOA. Within 10 days over half the birds were dead! Talked to the owner-I only asked for a refund or reship of 6 birds-not all the extras and offered vet bills and proof of living conditions etc. NOPE! says it was my fault that I didn't medicate the birds from day 1 and the FDA's fault they don't allow more meds in feed!
I have ordered from My Pet Chicken and Meyer and much more healthy and better quality birds.

and 75% + % of what I ordered were cockerels. Thats the chance you take with straight runs but I learned my lesson.

I am trying Strombergs early May.

What good are extra chicks if they all die or are boys!

I would hatch my own but I need more girls right now.

It looks like I will have to give up my flock. Anyone interested in wonderful BAs, BOs & EEs? I would like to keep the girls together if possible.

My mom's health has taken a huge turn for the worse. She'll be moving into a hospice facility tomorrow or Monday.
Her illness has been taking so much of my time that I need to downsize everything and prepare for the inevitable.

I'll also be getting her house ready to sell and set up some kind of estate sale. She has a vast collection of Hull pottery if anyone is interested in that. There are several "Bandana Duck" pieces. They are pretty cool.

The only upside to this ordeal is that after Mom passes, I can get the heck out of this city.

My first broody hen is in Day 19-20. And guess what? I'm pretty sure another one has gone broody. We got rid of our rooster almost 2 weeks ago so I probably need to buy her some fertile eggs right?

Anyone near the Dexter Ann Arbor area have fertile eggs they'd like to sell me?
