Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

They lied to us again! It is beautiful, but I'm so over it. Right after Christmas, I'm over it.
Okay, so I'm grumpy.
Mary

It's not really done around here til May... Always weather surprises :barnie. If Brett has his way we would relocate but my kids and grand kiddos are here so I have to keep my chin up . In the meantime....Enjoying the chicken and seed catalogs arriving in the mail :caf

I call them the 'Weather Guessers' :D
Sometimes they are dead on, sometimes not<shrugs>
I use Weather Underground, The Weather Channel, and the NWS...all online.
CanNOT stand the tv weatherespians and all their drama<rollseyes>
WU doesn't even estimate snowfalls any more...at least on my page.

But, yep, the cold and snow is back, only and inch or so here, for once (we usually get hammer with lake effect), just enough to pretty up the ugly piles left from the thaws. Both me, the dog, and the chickens thought the thaws felt pretty good...especially because there was no flooding here. Just starting to get excited about hatching, tho I lost one of my project birds :( (1 of 2, so half)so that kind of dampens the motivation.

Sorry about your bird, aart. What project? Just being nosey, but I love to hear about projects...
Mary
Got Marans hatching eggs and CCL pullet chicks(2) last year for guaranteed OE's this year. Lost one of the CCL to the cold, totally my fault, should have brought her in reset a day or 2 sooner, might have saved her. SMH.

well we know what they say about live stock... and how murphy's law seems to step in at the least convenient times. Sorry you lost the bird aart.

Yeah, livestock-deadstock.
It stinks.
I hadn't had any serious cold stress trouble until this year(my 5th winter).

Pullet was the first and worst because I think I could have prevented it and she was an 'expensive' project bird. She was pretty 'inactive', I brought her in after few days of that but it was too late I think. She wouldn't eat or drink, tried to syringe some liquids. Tho there was swallowing and no choking during that, back of my mind wonders if I drowned her. SMH. That one will kinda haunt me, hard lessons.

Then another (older bird) also was having trouble ambulating, so brought her in sooner, she was eating and drinking, so gave her some savachick, few hours later I took her back out and she's been fine since. I also gave the whole flock some savachik, do that in summer heat waves too, I really think it helped.

Then another older bird, who had some weird throat issue for a year(made odd croaking sounds regularly, sometimes frequently) but was active and otherwise normal, was dead on the floor one morning....think she was 'not hardy' to begin with.

Yeah, livestock-deadstock.
It stinks.

That's too bad. I've looked the CL's I've had.

If you want some Arkansas Blue hatching eggs let me know. They cross nicely to produce Olive Eggers, I have a nice AB-Delaware hen hatched last year that is a great layer.

Thanks. Think I'm going to stick with my local breeder, may try and get them to sell me some hatching eggs, or just buy a few more pullet chicks

Or you could wait until CS18 and I'll marry you guys. Bet you didn't know that I'm an ordained minister.
I'll run that by her, but I think we got most of everything sorted out. For some reason the IRS hasn't been able to figure out that I did have health insurance in 2016 despite me sending them the documentation that proves that I did that along with the tax associated with it. And then sent me another letter saying that I owed them money when they thought that they had already send me a refund. At worse, I should still be pretty close to being even with them, or maybe just have to send them a hundred bucks. But my Tax guy is pretty sure that I should be still getting money back from them. at least not sending them another 1200 bucks.

starting to debate on what kind of chicks I want to get this year. Going to have to get the brooder cleaned out sometime soon. I'm kinda thinking about going Easter Eggers perhaps.
